  1. Aw, yeah! Good ol' Vidpin.BIN (as I grew up playing it)! I suggested this one!

Love this game to death. I'm not sure what is considered a "good score" on this one, but I can keep the ball in play for quite a while in most cases.

According to my ever-so-handy High Score Notebook, my top score was 129,366 on difficulty 1 B/B. I don't think I've ever tried 3 A/A. I'll consult my manual to see what that setting does. I know that A on the switches adds those gaps.

  2. Why, thank you everyone for the Squad Challenge! I had a lot of fun competing with you all. I love this game, and I'm happy that we'll be playing this again next Christmas! Congratulations to everyone!

Pulling back on the D-Pad also increases your chances of falling off either side of the track, so be careful doing that.

That is true, but it can provide a helpful boost if you're low on speed.

    4. Skirt Jump Plates where possible. Jump plates are fun, but they slow you down from your top speed by a good 20%. If you're going for the best lap time, it's best to avoid them all together. Usually you can skirt past them on either side by hugging the wall. When shaving milliseconds counts, this is a strategy that adds up.

That is true to an extent. In reality, if you pull back on the dpad while in midair (down), you’ll maintain momentum and maybe even increase your speed if you aren’t at your top speed. Think of it like adjusting your landing angle in Excitebike.

Hours and hours I do not have.

I feel like that played a huge role in my success. Without all the time I spent I would probably still be chillin’ with Phil around the 2’18 mark (not like that is a bad thing). I practiced a lot for this, and it paid off. I think another part that helped is that I used to play this game a TON. Plus, it’s 16 bit, which helps. I don’t think I stand a chance with virtually any 2600 or NES game. Not yet anyway.

I'm going to go back in today and try the @RadioPoultry "bump-start" method.  I tried doing that earlier in the week, but couldn't quite figure it out.

His method may help you. I personally found better luck by simply hugging the walls tighter than that abominable snowman from Loony Tunes. “I’ll feed it and love it and name it George!”

I used the turbos in one specific spot all the time, that being the area with all the slowdown stuff on the side of the road. This is a game of milliseconds. You have to continue to cut every possible corner during the race. It may only be a difference of a few milliseconds compared to your last attempt, but it adds up fast.

This last run wasn’t flawless by any stretch. I ran into a few walls here and there, and there were spots where I could have cut some more corners. There is certainly wiggle room for someone to overtake it in the future, albeit not very much.

I recommend practicing for hours and hours and hours. Without @RadioPoultry pushing me to my limits, I would not have practiced as hard or played as much. I agree with you all— this was a very intense challenge! I enjoyed it thoroughly.

  6. I did it! And just minutes before the Squad Challenge ends at 11:59 Pacific (2 AM around these parts).

    2’13”92

Good game, everyone! (Unless someone has another score to post). @RadioPoultry, thanks especially for keeping me on my toes. I was starting to think that I would never beat you at this. I had a blast trying to beat your insanely good scores. If you ever want to do a 2 Player Battle on this game, just let me know!

Thank you, coach @socrates63, for teaching me to believe in myself!

This was a great Squad Challenge indeed. I love this game, and I love it even more now that I got to play it with all of you!

And sorry if I got a little... intense in spots. I meant it all in good fun. I don’t really have any “nemeses”. For now, at least.

Take care, everyone, and have a happy new year! I’m tired. It’s 2 in the morning and I have been playing this silly game for hours trying to beat a chicken. I think I might head to bed.

Addendum:  I should also mention we kids knew not to mess with certain areas of said basement.  Example:  The laundry room was off limits.  Do not make a mess there.  And my dad's storage areas (mostly his wine) -- DO NOT ENTER/LOOK/THINK-ABOUT-IT.

Don’t worry, I don’t plan on going into the other areas of the basement. Just making a little area for us to hang out in down here. We are planning on making a massive, several trips long Goodwill run, which should clear up a lot of space.

Hey, since I have some free reign down here, what should I do? Anyone have any good ideas?

What's wrong with the basement?  It sounds like this is a downgrade?

When I was a kid, the basement in our house was the kids domain.  We set up a game room down there, did our homework down there, and visits from friends were always down there.  I always loved it.  Although it was cold, we could make noise, arrange things the way we liked, and generally "own the space".

The basement certainly has its pros. However, it’s much harder to organize here without the cubbyholes for the consoles, more space by the TV, closet space, etc. It’s not too much of a downgrade, it’s just not preferable. At least it is much easier to stay up playing games in the late hours of the night undetected down here.

Was it the noise that caused you to get moved?

No, it was much more complicated. I probably would not have had to disassemble everything if my mom was not already in a bad mood from previous events of the past few days. It was sort of out of spite mixed with a few simple mistakes from the recent past. Our family isn’t doing great right now. I don’t really want to get into the specifics here.

  9. Hey everyone.

For those of you who didn’t already know: my game room has been ransacked. My mom essentially kicked me out of it. So, my consoles and I are migrating to our unfinished basement, temporarily, I hope. From around 2013 to mid 2018, our games all lived down here until we moved them up to the home office.I worked hard these past few days to try to restore this “old game room” to its former glory. I haven’t moved any consoles down here yet, save for my GBA which has just been keeping me company. I did move a couple of games here, though.

With an unfinished, concrete-covered basement, it can only look so nice. But at least I tried my best. At least it’s a clean basement, which I guess matters more than how chic it is. Hopefully we can move back upstairs soon. For now, though, this is ok. At least we have a rug so our feet don’t get cold and a couch to sit on.

I plan on updating you all on what I do with this temporary gaming space in this thread. Please look forward to it.

  10. My dad introduced me to a lot of the games I play. Without him, I would most certainly not be here. So we played a lot of things together, like Combat, Mortal Kombat, Super Metroid, Mario Kart, NES Golf, and more. For a while, he was busy and we didn’t play many games together, as I always wanted to play things like Super Mario Brothers 3 and he wanted to play more competitive games like Madden 93. However, over the past year we have been playing a lot more, as we found many  games we could agree on and his schedule better accommodated these faster and more competitive games. 10-Yard Fight, NES Baseball, and Video Olympics are a few of our new favorites. In fact, just the other day we played some Fishing Derby and Jedi Arena. Two awesome games, by the way.

As for my mom (and most other adults in my family), well... *cough cough*

Yes, @HDN there's a piano in the office where my CRT TV sits. No, I don't play any instrument actually. The piano was a gift from my dad to my wife when we married. I briefly gave it a try last year, and I even bought a book (You Suck at Piano) that was supposed to teach non-musical adults. Learning to play piano is hard!

Learning to play guitar is a bucket list item for me. I tried two times (once when I was in college and a second time a few years ago) and failed both times -- these short fat fingers but more than that, it's these nails that grow beyond the finger tips.

Wait, your piano and setup are in your home office as well? What is this, the Twilight Zone?

I understand that starting to play the guitar is very hard (and painful) at first. There was an online series I learned from on YouTube, I believe it was called Morgan Guitars or something. Check it out. I’ll see if I can’t find it again.
