  1. My gaming table is bare. I may leave it this way and take a break.  I'm sure we all have that desire once in a while, right?

Not so fast!  These items came in the mail today from Greece. One allows the use of a USB mouse on an Amiga or ST. The other allows the use of 2600 joystick on a 5200.

I think the 5200 will be out soon.

  2. My house is empty again and I get my gaming room back!  VCS challenges are back in play!!!

I like this setup! This reminds me a lot of the room I had set up when I first launched this website (pre-forums). I had a rack just like that with 2600 and 7800 components that had been parted out into parts bins. I'm glad to see you get to enjoy this hobby to the extent of having a room for it 🙂

Thank you.  I have to give it up when we have guests or the kids come back home to stay for a visit.  But otherwise, I've had some fun in this room.

  3. My latest acquisition is Video Pinball (boxed) for the Atari 2600.  (Sorry about the flash washout).  I don't know why it took me so long to buy this one, as it seems to be very common.  In any case, the box is in good shape and didn't need any refurbishing.

  4. My latest Atari 2600 game acquisition. Note the "Sports Illustrated " label!  It's an R7 rarity.

      Nice get, Rick!

I never knew Avalon Hill made 2600 games until a few months ago. So many companies made games for the 2600 that I never heard of. It’s pretty amazing what was happening with the 2600 while I had my nose deep in Atari 8-bit.

    3. RickR

      RickR

That's true.  The sad part is how a lot of companies put out some really great games right before or after the crash but got overlooked by all the crap that had saturated the market.

Cool grab Rick! I've never played this one before.

  5. My latest pickups are these two boxed 2600 games.  The boxes are a little beat up, but they'll look good on my shelf.  The carts are in nice condition.

For an Activision cart, the label looks like it's still in pretty good condition!

There doesn't seem to be any Actiplaque on the Dragster label. Looks nice. :O)

Actually, that Sneak 'N Peek box looks pretty good considering. :O)

  6. My next item up for sale is an Atari 1025 printer.  Local pickup in Portland, OR :) (it's HEAVY and would cost a bundle to ship).

      BOOM!  Sold.

  7. My project today was to repair a six switch 2600, which had a broken joystick port (pin 5 missing) and player 1 difficulty switch.  So, I "borrowed" those parts from a broken 4-port board.  It all works perfectly now, and the next step will be to add a composite mod.  Tools used were a push-button suction desoldering iron and a normal soldering iron.

  8. New glasses!

The main reason I post this here is this:  If you wear progressive lenses like me...get a second pair of "computer" glasses if you can.  Mine are from Costco, and that second pair was $100 extra.  They have a much larger "normal"/middle area and it makes it a lot easier to see computer screens without tilting your neck all day.  That has made work easier.  But it's also PERFECT for video games!  I can see the periphery a lot better.  Highly recommended for old fart gamers like me.

  9. Next up for sale from me will be a Mattel Aquarius, including a multi-cart.  Please contact me if you are interested.  I'll be taking pictures and listing it soon.

I didn’t even know that thing existed before. I did a little bit of research, and wow. That thing is certainly... underwhelming. But interesting nonetheless. How did you even FIND that thing, @RickR? It seems pretty rare.

    2. RickR

      RickR

How did I find it?  I don't remember.  Most likely it was an ebay purchase many years ago.

It's fascinating to me.  What was Mattel thinking?  There is no way it could compete with the VIC-20.  It's games were worse than the Intellivision.  It's just a complete miss.

As a collectible, it's interesting.  The shape of the computer is cool.  The version of BASIC included is excellent.  It's kind of rare I guess.

Hopefully I can find an appreciative buyer.

I see it is in Finnish. I wonder if it is a market in Espoo, Helsinki, or Turku. Funny. XD

  11. Oh guys, I'm feeling so overwhelmed at work lately.  Please forgive me for venting, but it's gotten so difficult.  Do more with less.  I just feel so bad that I can't seem to keep up.

Thanks, J.  You know, sometimes it helps just to type it out to friends.

My wife says I should quit.  But I don't want to do that.  It would let down too many people, including me.

    3. Justin

      Justin

I agree with you. Don't quit unless it's what you really want to do. Do you feel this is a current project that has driven things to become more difficult? Or have things changed in your work environment in general which have made things more of a challenge?

    4. RickR

      RickR

My main issue is that I find myself with zero support from above.  My supervisors are all very busy on other important things (I guess they are overwhelmed too), and I feel too much pressure to make decisions that feel way above my pay grade.  At the same time, I work in an area of business that is shrinking.

  12. One new boxed item on my game room shelf...the 400 on the top right.

Hmm.  A CAPCOM game.  Those guys have been known to make some of the best "odd" games around.  It's not like CAPCOM to release something that is total crap.  Personally...I never knew about it.

I played the first "case" last night.  It's fun!  Such a unique game.  Feels very "Japanese".

  14. One of my children just informed me that Joe Decuir will be giving a lecture at his university.  I pointed at my wall where we have a signed Combat cart.  He's a fount of knowledge and such a nice man.  I may try to sit in on that one.

Joe Decuir's lectures are the best in the Atarisphere imo. What an interesting man to listen to.

Is that at Seattle U, Rick?

I made his acquaintance online last year. He’s a generous man and wanted to meet up with me when the pandemic clears up. I’ll let you know when that day comes. Maybe you could join us.

    3. RickR

      RickR

Yes, Seattle U.  I've met him, and yes, please let me know if you don't mind me tagging along when the time comes.

  15. Our local library has a "for sale" section where all books/cd's/DVD's are 50 cents and magazines are free.  Today, they had a big stack of Nintendo Power from 2010/11/12, so I grabbed three at random.

  16. Pardon the mess, but today I've quadrupled my home-office knick knack display capabilities by installing these two shelves.

Working from home is awesome.  I didn't like it at first.  But I've come to appreciate it very much now.  BUT using space efficiently and keeping things neat has been a challenge.

      That works!

We may also make it multi-platform with the 5200 version, which is brutally hard.

    3. Justin

      Justin

@RickR I agree, I was thinking along similar lines. Definitely would open it up to Berzerk and Berzerk Enhanced so everyone can play. 5200 is super hard. How does scoring on 5200 compare with 2600?

    4. RickR

      RickR

I'd have to examine it further, but I think the scoring is very similar.

And Berzerk Enhanced is NOT the same game.  When I was playing last night, the robots can shoot diagonal.  I don't think they do on original 2600 Berzerk.  It makes the game harder.

  19. Really sad news via Marty Goldberg on Facebook:

It is with great sadness I announced the passing of Atarian Regan Cheng on April 4th after a two year battle with cancer. Regan was 1/2 of the world's first video game industrial design team consisting of him and Pete Takaichi under the leadership of George Faraco. Joining in 1972 while both were still pursuing a degree from San Jose State University, the duo designed Pong-In-A-Barrel as their first project before moving on to work on the infamous Gotcha cabinet. and a slew of others. Ronald Wayne (who would later go on to co-found Apple) went on to manage them after George's departure and by 1975 they were crucial to Atari's coin cabinet designs helping carve out Atari's unique look and feel in the arcades and were joined by Clint Graham, Phil Kearney, and Carl Lepinne. Iconic looking games like Night Driver, Evel Knievel and more.

Back in those days everything was done by hand, no modern CAD or design software. As Regan recalled last year regarding the days when Atari used off the shelf TV's in it's arcade games: "I recall us design guys creating the card board bezels to custom fit to each new TV. Took a while to do. We would trace the final pattern and give to a die cutting shop to make production parts. What a kick. Now we would use 3D CAD and 3D print . It was a kick."

Also in 1975 Regan became involved in Atari's foray into consumer products with Home PONG. By the early 80s he had left the Coin Division and was responsible for helping craft the futuristic look of Atari's home offerings like the Atari 5200 and their XL line of computers and products like the Atari 2600s Star Raiders controller as well as the phone products in Atari's pioneering AtariTel division.

Leaving Atari in 1983, he continued to play a role in Silicon Valley going on to work for such companies as Sigen Corporation, NAMCO, Data East, Global VR and Google (in their Google Fiber group). Regan is survived by his son, sister Donna, and a brother.

This is very upsetting. Regan is a friend and colleague. We worked on a project along with Gene Landrum for many years pioneering mixed reality in ways that have yet to be done on a mass scale. That's Regan pictured with me at Atari World Headquarters on Borregas in the top left photo. Regan is a hell of a talented designer, and a very interesting person to talk with. I'd give him a quick call and 3 hours later would realize we really need to get going. I learned so much about product design from him, where inspiration is drawn from, etc. He showed me his vintage Jeep once that he bought with "Atari money" which was very cool. What an unbelievable loss to this world.

  20. Recent pickups.

I've been wanting Colecovision "One on One" for a long time.  It's the crappiest version of one of my favorite games.

The Lynx SD cart is just plain awesome.

It's horrible!  I know the CV could do so much better than this.  WTH!  The horribleness makes me love it even more, though.

  21. RickR has a modern console for once.  I picked up a used 3ds today.  I'll admit, the purple color was a selling point.

  22. RickR just got outstanding medical lab results.  Lowest cholesterol number in over 20 years for example.

I'm not sure the reason beyond luck, but I have been exercising more (biking, lifting) and eating better (more fruits/veg, less sugar, caffeine) and less.  But I'm very grateful and hopeful things stay this good.

  23. RickR's 1980 "Night Driver" high scores.  I was 11, and a lot better at the game than I am today!

  24. Ron Howard is 70 today!  What is your favorite Ron Howard role?  Opie, Steve from American Grafitti, Richie Cunningham, or any multitude of other parts?

    image.png

    1. Justin

      Justin

It's hard not to say Opie, that's such an iconic role. Happy Days is nearly as iconic, as is American Graffiti. I've really enjoyed Ron Howard as a film maker. My "favorite" role honestly has to be as the narrator on Arrested Development as the show would not be what it was without it.

    2. RickR

      RickR

Oooh, Arrested Development narrator is a great one that I didn't think of!  Nice.

    3. DegasElite

      DegasElite

My favorite Ron Howard role is probably Richard Cunningham from "Happy Days." Opie Taylor is a close second. I have never seen all of "American Graffiti," so I have no opinion about that one.
