  4. Sorry to be a downer, but out here in Oregon, things are very bleak.  Fires throughout the state are devastating lives and homes and entire communities.  As I type this, the sky outside our home is an eerie orange.  Fires loom only miles away.  It's windy and dry and hot.  I'm terrified.  We are packing bags tonight in case the call comes to evacuate.  I've lived here my whole life, and never experienced anything like this.  Take care of yourselves, everybody.

  7. That special dilemma of buying old stuff that's never been opened.  Should I open them up and display the ships on my shelf?  Or leave them in the box where they can't be examined and enjoyed up close?

Also, having been collecting Atari since 1993 I was used to hunting down and collecting NOS / MIB games still sealed. I usually got these at Kay-Bee Toys, Sears Outlet, @Video 61 or ordering from Atari directly. Lynx games came from Toys R Us and Babbage's. I treated games the same way I did baseball cards, I'd always try to buy TWO of everything, if not three. One new one to open, one new one to put away and keep sealed. If I bought a third, that would always be to put away sealed to save for a potential trade someday in the future. I'm still that way. I DO open brand new Atari games if it's the first in my collection and I'm going to be playing it for the rest of my life. Once I have duplicates, I ENJOY having them sit on the shelf. I love pulling them out and looking at them, looking at the box, looking through catalogs, appreciating the artwork and feeling the original retail experience that we used to feel buying these games. And of course I put a few away for future giveaways. This works for me and this is the approach that brings me happiness. Whatever makes you HAPPY is what I recommend, other people's ideas of what you should be doing don't really matter as long as you love what you're doing and enjoy your collection to the max.

      Right on, brother.

I got these sets for a song on ebay and let them sit in the garage for a week while I thought about it.  This little shelf is right above my main desk.  Now that I work from home, I look at it every day.  Seeing these little ships will bring happiness for sure.

I have that same issue with Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars.  Some of them you just have to open.

  8. The "Atari Shelf".  I've been fiddling around a lot with the 7800 and Concerto cart lately.

  9. The "broken" robo vac works once I replaced the battery. It's kind of impressive how much stuff it picks up. I wonder how it knows where the home base is?  I bet Rod Sterling would have written a killer Twilight Zone episode about these things.

Glad you got it working.. and just for the price of a battery!  EXCELLENT!

    2. Justin

      Justin

Funny how so many modern things are "broken" until people fix them. In previous generations our parents were able to fix a lot of household appliances and products, and if not they could always call "the TV / VCR repair man" or "The Maytag Man" etc.

    3. RickR

      RickR

I'm with you @Justin.  In a lot of cases, things now use integrated circuits and very "small" designs, making them hard to repair.  But that wasn't the case here.  The vacuum has a clearly marked battery compartment.  All that was needed was a screwdriver and set of pliers.

I have a lot of these types of "fixed" items in my home just because I love fixing things.  It's fun for me and saves things from going to the landfill.

The robo vacuum is fascinating.  I've never had one before.  It works a lot better than I thought it would.  It isn't just a sweeper, it actually does vacuum.  I'm sure everyone else already knows all this, but the part that intrigues me the most is how it goes until it's battery runs down and then somehow finds it's way back to the base station to recharge.  There must be a radio signal or something to get it back to the right spot.  I also really like how it goes into those spots that a normal vac can't reach easily, like under the bed.

  10. The AtariAge "Last Chance" sale ends THIS SUNDAY 7/23/23.  I ordered a couple of 2600 games that were on my list.  Grab em before they are gone!

  13. The most blessed news I've heard in some time:

Level 1 reduced to Level Zero

Effective immediately (Sunday, Sept. 13), the Clackamas Co Sheriff’s Office is dropping the evacuation level for some of the populated urban areas from Level 1 (Green) back to Normal. This includes Wilsonville, Lake Oswego, West Linn, Happy Valley, Gladstone, Milwaukie, Clackamas, and Tualatin. See map https://bit.ly/35kgtbE for changes.

  16. There's an unprecedented heat-wave here.  I've had to move my collection out of the attic.  It's way too hot in there for this stuff.  Future plans include selling some of this stuff off and moving the rest into the garage (which is far more climate-controlled).

      RickR

I have a plan formulated to move garage stuff up into the attic and my collection into the garage.  It will take some time, and that's a lot of carrying/stairs.  But it's a plan.  And I already have a pile of garage stuff to ditch.

  17. This one is leaving my collection soon.  It's a nicely working Commodore 64c.  I put an ad on Craigslist and got several interested buyers. Why am I selling?  I have a "breadbin" 64 that's in very faded condition cosmetically, but I've replaced everything broken on the inside.  One 64 is enough for me.

Interestingly, I tried Facebook marketplace first, but only got one lukewarm response.  That's unusual.  The Craigslist post got many inquiries.  It's funny how those two seem to flip-flop in popularity.

Those power supplies are known to go bad and take the C64 with it.  This one tests out fine.  But it makes sense to either buy a modern power adapter or buy a Ray Carlson sacrificial diode wire.

On my breadbin, I built my own power adapter AND use the diode thing.

  18. This week, I'm buying a new roof for our home.  Can we all admit that being an adult sucks sometimes?  There's very little time or $$ for gaming.

I was just discussing the cost of a new roof with somebody yesterday. It's not cheap.

    2. RickR

      RickR

That's right -- not cheap.  It's also very difficult to choose a trustworthy company and try to choose a color you can live with for the next 30 years.

On the tour at Universal, they mentioned that they leave the top off the 308 because Tom Selleck would not fit with the roof on.

Nice! Is it much cheaper than an actual N64 Everdrive? Any downsides compared to an actual Everdrive?

During Black Friday, I ordered Everdrives for SNES and Genesis. Even if you're a collector, playing games using these types of cartridges makes a lot of sense. I use the Harmony Encore cartridge to play 2600 games even though I have the actual game cartridges.

    3. RickR

      RickR

$60 for this vs. $160 for the real Everrdrive.  The only downside is that longevity is unknown.

I have several everdrives (NES, SNES, Genesis, TG16, GBC), and they all work most excellently.  I agree they make good sense.  Not just in overall cost-savings, but in convenience.

Plus, it saves wear and tear on the original cartridges. It's a neat idea, actually.

  22. TUESDAY NIGHT CHAT!

I will be in the chat tonight (around 7:15pm Pacific).  My goal is to try a few rounds of emulated Cybermorph for the high score challenge.  Join me if you'd like to see how that goes.  Maybe you need guidance on setting up an emulator.  Maybe offer me some tips on the game.  Or whatever you'd like to chat about.

Don't get me wrong, it's really not a big deal.  It's just surprising at this time of year.  We have all we need to stay warm and healthy.
