Welcome to our 24th Club VCS Recharged Squad Challenge!!! For this challenge, we're taking on SqueakyBox and Atari's take on the APX cult hit Caverns of Mars!

The original Caverns of Mars was was famously programmed a teenage Greg Christensen for the Atari Program Exchange (APX) in 1981 for the Atari 8-Bit. It went on to become the best selling APX game program ever.  Atari included the game in the Atari50 collection.

More than 40 years later, Atari returned to the red planet with Caverns of Mars: Recharged! Progress through 30 unique missions set within three primary “depths” of Mars, descending deeper and deeper into enemy territory. Blast through oncoming hostile fire, bull through debris and obstructions, and dodge other obstacles all while keeping a close eye on fuel and ammo reserves!

Play in ARCADE mode from level one and take the game as far as you can for the high score!

  2. Wi-Fi Issues:

I tried to update my Evercade VS today and it would not connect to my router. Last month, I updated my router to a dual band mesh system. All of my devices work on it. The VS saw the network but would error when connecting.

I visited the Evercade Discord and asked about the issue. Members there said some users reported problems with dual band, but that if I turned off 5GHz, it might work. They also recommended a factory reset. I tried these solutions without success.

Finally, it struck me that I could try my phone's mobile hotspot. This immediately connected and I was able to update the system. However, the VS will still not connect to my router.

Sharing this here in case others experience a similar issue.

  3. I downloaded this on Steam at lunch and ran on my VCS in PC-Mode. It crashed on my 8GB VCS but was fine on my 16GB unit.

I did not have the original BITD, so I don't have any nostalgia for the game. However, the options menu and scrolling view from the original game are not enabled. This is offputting for me as I prefer zoom and scroll tables - at least optionally. The new Atari-themed tables are cool and in a much higher resolution than the original tables. The original tables are presented with a ton of black/empty space.

Overall, this is a bit underwhelming. I'd much rather play Pinball Fantasies on the Jaguar. It's only $8.99, but I'd wait for a 50 percent off sale TBH.

The Atari Network has been copyright struck and a video has been removed from the channel!  This is the big violation where if I get 3 I lose my channel, not the usual copyright violation.  The person who is making the allegations that I stole their content?  DJ Nurse Annabelle from the 8 Track and Lava Lamps pirate radio station.  The truth?  I gave her Atari 7800 game a bad score and it made her upset.  So she is trying to censor a review (that only had 230 views by the way) through wrongful copyright allegations.  This is an abuse of the system and I will not stand for it!

This is the video in question.  It was a transformative review and not a lift of her content.  I did not say the game was made by me and I did not say the art and idea of her silly station was made by me.  The Atari Network will fight this abuse of the system and we will win.

Also I did a Livestream test last night and will be doing the first episode of the yet to be named 7800 Pro Gamer Livestream Show tonight!  We will talk and discuss about Vinnie Vineyard hosting the Atari Network podcast alone last Friday.  He mostly did a good job but he also spread lies and misinformation about me!  It will be addressed because the future of the podcast just might be hanging in the balance!  We will also be talking about some of the things I missed from last Fridays show, the new releases by Atari that was announced, the copyright strike I suffered and the truth about her Atari 7800 game, what possible 7800 enhanced game could be coming and we'll also play and beat a game live for you all on stream.

So join us tonight on the Atari Network YouTube channel around 10 or 10:30pm Eastern Standard Time for the stream!  Then come back to the channel tomorrow, Thursday February 1st for our comparison of Ms Pac Man on various Atari consoles!  And every other Friday we have the Atari Network podcast with Vinnie Vineyard and myself!  Not this Friday but the next one!

Thanks for the support and stay classy Atarians!

I caught part of the test stream. I can't believe that Vinnie would stoop so low! 💩🛏

That's terrible about the strike. It's definitely an abuse of the system.

I tried the demo last night (as well as the Gunship demo which seems very similar).  I found it super hard to control.  Maybe there is a different control scheme to try?  Pushing the stick in the direction you want to travel just isn't working in my brain, as a ship with momentum should use the "Asteroids" style controls.  But I'll keep trying.  It looks beautiful.

I feel the same way. I think it would be much better as a twin-stick. This is a pre-Alpha demo, so hopefully the final sees some improvement.

    What is the Gunship demo?!

I just tried a demo of this.  This one is going to be fun. I had a blast with the demo.

If you like this, check out BPM Boy from the same dev. It's been exclusive to VCS for over a year and a half. The dev, Tony Barnes (aka Retro Ninja), worked on the Strike series BITD.

I did that to both after the system got its update.

Are these controllers Bluetooth? If so how do you pair them up with the VCS?

Yes, they are BT. To pair them with the VCS at start-up press and hold the Fuji button until it starts flashing rapidly. The VCS should recognize it.

Alternatively, you can pair in the system menu through devices.

Here's a link to the manual for the controllers:

My impression on the VCS is meh. It seems to struggle doing things.

If you're starting from new, you have a lot of updates to get through - three years of them. After the updates you should be good to go. If you're having specific issues, feel free to ask in ClubVCS hardware discussion and someone should be able to help.
