What are your top ten Atari 2600 games?

Hey there, everyone! It's me, HDN! I'm new here at Atari.io and I would love to get to know the community! And what better way to know the 2600 community than by asking everyone what some of their favorite games for the system? I'll start with mine. I have a few picks that you might not expect:

 

10. Outlaw

9. Venture

8. Miniature Golf

7. Space Invaders

6. Pitfall II: the Lost Caverns

5. Q*bert

4. Moon Patrol

3. Donkey Kong

2. Pac-Man

1. Tunnel Runner

Well, as some of y'all know, I keep an ongoing ranking of the 2600 games I review. After 230+ games, here's my current top ten:

1)    Adventure 
2)    Pitfall! 
3)    Yars' Revenge 
4)    Ice Hockey 
5)    Haunted House 
6)    Ms. Pac-Man 
7)    River Raid 
8 )   Dig Dug  
9)    Demon Attack 
10)    Space Invaders

Woah dude! It's so cool that@nosweargamer found my thread! Love your show, dude, though Ice Hockey at number four? That's an interesting choice. I'd say it's mediocre at best. But seriously, keep up the good work, man!

Choosing a top 10 list of games for the 2600 is hard!  I recently put a list of 10 of my favorites games for the system in no particular order:

1. Crystal Castles

2. Stargate

3. Enduro

4. Space Invaders

5. Dodge’Em

6. Pengo

7. Millipede

8. The Official Frogger

9. Beamrider

10. Phaser Patrol

@TrekMD Crystal Castles! I love the arcade! I loved just spinning the trak ball as fast as I could to get to the top-left corner in the first level and activating the warp! I thought it was so cool when I discovered that.

I haven’t played enough 2600 games yet to build a top 10. Here’s a list of games I’ve enjoyed so far (not including homebrews) in no particular order:

[*] Freeway

[*] Cosmic Ark

[*] Chopper Command

[*] Demon Attack

[*] Defender

Gee...just 10?  Well, here goes:

7. Video Chess (sometimes I like the relaxing games)

Kind of hard to just pick 10 but those are my top favorites.

If you're just starting out on the 2600 most of the best games are common and cheap. Atari isn't in as high of a demand as Nintendo is right now. Looking at the games you picked, I'd recommend Berzerk, Phoenix, Moon Patrol, Vanguard, and Megamania.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said the games are common and cheap.  I say buy all you can find and you'll find some hidden gems for sure.  You should be able to find most common games for $1 - $5 each.  Buy big lots on ebay to get the best deals.  I've got a big box of duplicate games that I'd sell cheap if anyone is interested.  It's a fun and inexpensive hobby.

I currently have the 2600 list published here, although I need to update it in the near future, probably when I finish reviewing paddle games this month:

I plan to publish other lists as the get bigger as well.

Every game listed here is excellent, so you can't go wrong with any of them.  Like I said, there are so many to choose from!

It's funny how an Atari 2600 game is considered expensive if it's over $10. I wish the SNES or NES were that cheap. The 2600 is in my opinion the easiest and most fun retro console to collect for. The nostalgia boom for that console is over so the games are not in high demand. It's the perfect time to start collecting.
