  1. Altered Beast was the first Genesis game I ever played. I've spoken about "console arcades" in another post (see http://forums.atari.io/index.php/topic/2599-console-arcades/), but the console arcade next door to my house got the Genesis when Altered Beast was the pack in game for the Genesis still, and I remember playing it and being blown away. I had no idea it was originally an arcade game, and was just thrilled to be playing a new 16 bit title that blew my NES and Atari out of the water!

We still love it today at our house too... there are times my daughter or I say "Welcome to your doom!" as a running joke  :D Two players simultaneous play is another notch in its favor, and lets face it, it's CHEAP if you're just starting a Genesis collection. It was one of the first games I picked up when I got a Genesis a few years back.

Just do yourself a favor and stay far, far away from the SMS version though... *shudders* My wife got a copy for me in a lot of SMS games she bought me for Christmas, and after playing it once it has stayed firmly on the shelf, collecting dust.

The SMS version is REALLY bad, and I honestly believe Sega didn't even try.  I know the Master System isn't the Genesis, but they could've done much better.

  2. In my opinion the 7800 is the untapped pinnacle of Atari 8-bit awesomeness. For 1984 it was amazing and even when compared to early NES there are a number of ways in which the 7800 performs very well. Unfortunately I don't see that the 7800 ever reached its full potential. Nintendo continued to develop the NES and push the envelope of what it could do, meanwhile Atari Corp. was aggressive about cost-saving measures, i.e. no POKEY, no new chips, no new accessories, etc. The 7800 was left to compete for shelf space with the XE, 2600, and Lynx before facing the real competition from Nintendo, Sega and others. I would love to see the new Retron include 7800 compatibility and hopefully jumpstart a new frontier of 7800 homebrew developers. Not to do so I believe would be a mistake.

I probably won't buy it if it doesn't support 7800 games.

  3. That's a tough one. Usually, it's a robot that makes the claims on the authors behalf. In this case, it is sooo close to the original it might catch it, if the bot is programmed for that specific song. In game music is not claimed as much as regular songs and music, so it might not get claimed, but it still could. So far the only in game music I've been claimed on is the Star Wars music from the Sega CD Rebel Assault endings I've posted. (In my review, where I was talking over most everything, it did not get claimed)

My suggestion: If you decided to go with it, have a backup edit with different music just in case, or at least keep enough files that you could re-edit it if need be

Do you think that if I have someone playing Streets Of Rage, and then the music starts for the next scene, it could work? If not, I'll find a better remix.
  4. I have a video I'm making (I can't give any details at this time) that I'll be using some remixes of game songs in.  I have a question about this one though.

    https://youtu.be/t8JpbPKC9lE?list=PL7LTBDGwCmsqDExTmiYvVTGN0VpIR3--h

This is basically an extended version of Keep The Groovin' from Streets Of Rage.  Some instruments have been slightly changed and sections have been added.  I'm about to contact 8-Beats and ask permission to use this remix, but would it be a wise choice to use this?  I'm afraid of Yuzo Koshiro or Sega claiming it.  This will be the biggest (and most important) video I've ever made, and I don't want any copyright claims on it.

  5. Don't you just love it when you buy a game and find out later it won't play on your system?  Well, I picked up Pitfall! International Edition today wondering if it was from Europe, and sure enough, it was.  The game will only run on a PAL Atari, which I'm sure most people here in North America don't have.  It makes me wonder why this game was here considering Pitfall came out in the US and Canada in NTSC format.

So remember, Pitfall! International Edition is PAL.  How to spot this version is simple.  On the front of the label under "Pitfall!", instead of saying "Pitfall Harry's Jungle Adventure", it'll say "International Edition".

  6. Nope. I want nothing to do with them.

Besides, from what I understand, Custards Revenge gave the clear appearance that the goal of the game is to help Custard get his revenge by raping a tied down Native American woman named Revenge (even if the makers tried to cover up the goal when protests arose). Seriously, that is sick. Even if games like this claimed everything is consensual, I personally think they're disgusting and I don't want anything to do with the porn industry, especially since it tends to objectify women as sex objects and has been harmful to many lives and families.

So long story short, for these reasons among others, if I ever found a copy of one of these games mixed in a box of games I bought off of ebay, I'd have no problem forgoing the $ to trash it instead.

Just to clarify, I'm not out to force my beliefs on anybody, I'm not out to judge anybody who does collect them or would buy or sell them. I'm just answering the question for myself.

I agree, I wouldn't play them or buy them. While I believe it's disgusting, to me it seems silly these days considering what these are, porn games on an Atari 2600. That being said, it certainly was nothing to laugh about back then, but now, I feel it's seen as more of a joke than anything controversial. While I certainly laugh when someone mentions these games, I myself wouldn't play them since I'm a Christian and even if I wasn't, I still think they're sick and that this isn't the way that people should view a member of the opposite sex.

What I find interesting is how many of these games came out, and not all were Mystique and Playaround. There was one called X-Man by some other company and I believe there was at least one more. Also, Playaround made gender reversed version of some of these games. Seriously, these guys were huge perverts.

In general, I don't care if other people wanna try these games out, but I'd rather avoid them no matter how silly or collectible they are. There are better rare games out there like Frogger 2 Threeedeep, Swordquest Waterworld, and Quadrun. Still, whether we like it or not, these will forever be part of video game history.
