Atari.io as confessional. Forgive me for I have sinned. Yesterday, I "sniped" an ebay auction. I did it for two reasons:
- I knew I'd forget. This auction ended during work hours. No matter how much I would tell myself "check e-bay at 4pm", I knew I'd forget. Indeed, when I got notice that I'd won, I was totally surprised. I DID forget.
- How many of this particular item did I lose in the past? Probably two dozen by the minimum amount over my max bid.
Anyway, I won't do it often, but I can't say I'll never snipe again.

There are automated tools that will bid at the last second.

We have a spot at the table for you too, @HDN, and also any other Atari.io members.

I pre-ordered the physical release for the Nintendo Switch when it came out. I haven't had a chance to play it. What have you played on it?
-
Mostly, it's fun to read and watch all the history bits.
The coin op games are a ton of fun. There's some obscure stuff on there. But the real prize is Tempest with the VCS spinner. It's a lot of fun to play that way.

Batari now has HOKEY chips available for people who purchased a Concerto cart in the past. Check your e-mails for a link to his Erstwhile Technologies site.

Before and after pictures of my "gaming credenza". I cleaned up a bit to make some room to add a Nintendo 64.
With a full house due to the pandemic, this is all the space I have to work with for retro gaming. There are several systems in here:
- Wii (with GameCube support)
- Retron 3 (NES, SNES, Genesis)
- PS2
- Atari 2600jr
- N64

Yes, the PS2 can play PS1 games, I believe. And many models of the PS3 can play PS2 and PS1. Lots of people were upset at the lack of backwards compatibility on the PS4.
When you say "RF Switchbox", do you mean one of these?
Or one of these?
Because I might be able to help you out. I have an extra of the latter, and one of the former I can't use. Not sure if the screw-in one works as I have no way of testing it.
-
The latter, but I do have one of those. I also have one with push buttons and 8 inputs. But like I said, it's a wiring nightmare. I think I may stick to my "no RF" policy in the gaming credenza.
(The 7800 has been composite modded :) )
-
No RF policy? That's strange. Over here, RF is my best friend. None of my CRTs used composite until I found one at a rummage sale that had it. I still haven't found a use for that thing yet.
Here's what the RF wiring setup is over in the gameroom:
FLATSCREEN CRT
\CABLE SPLITTER/
|
NES
|
SNES
|
RF MODULATOR (COMPOSITE ADAPTER)
/ \
ATARI 7800 XBOX
In my room, it's like this:
CRT
|
VCR/DVD COMBO
|
RF MODULATOR
| \
ATARI 2600 WII U
I love RF. The picture isn't great (at all), but I'm able to daisy-chain the things together. And, I can use a CRT, which is how most of these games were meant to be played. RF on a flatscreen looks like garbage. Convenience and not having to plug in and out all my systems is much better than picture quality in my opinion.

Best wishes to those in Florida that may be impacted by the upcoming Idalia. 🤞

It's starting to come down pretty hard right now. We're getting the outer bands of it as it approaches shore, which shouldn't hit us until morning. This won't be a direct hit for us unless it moves lower but we'll still get hit with some of it. I think @TrekMD and everybody on that side should be okay 🙂

Blast! I just got sniped at the last second on an ebay auction! Oh well. Money stays in pocket.
-
What was the auction for? Just curious.
I don't much care for eBay auctions for that reason alone.
-
It was for a Colecovision Roller Controller. A track-ball for CV.
It happens. As with most things, I try to find the bright side.

Club VCS pins arrived today! Thank you @Sabertooth These are so cool. If you haven't joined Club VCS yet, what the heck are you waiting for?

Computer upgrade time!
My trusty main desktop computer is dying. I believe it's the motherboard that failed. The built-in network adapter failed about a year ago. And now the CPU is overheating. No amount of reseating the heatsink or re-applying thermal compound helps. My guess is the capacitors are dying, causing too-high voltage.I searched high and low for a pre-built computer that wasn't too terribly expensive, but failed. It isn't easy to find a desktop that has an optical drive (or space for one) AND the ability to add in a big video card (including power connectors). Most of what I found was over $1000.
Instead, I consulted one of my children, who helped me pick these parts. Total spent is $200. I'll re-use a lot of my existing setup. Including the DDR4 memory, power supply, case, SSD, and Blu-ray drive.
Hopefully, I can get my Windows license to transfer.
Wish me luck!

<knock on wood>...so far, it works GREAT. I didn't even have to re-install windows. It just booted right up, and here I am.

CRANK IT UP! End your day properly with some Yars' Revenge music. (Courtesy of @Sabertooth, who brought this up several weeks ago)

I've been playing more Zorro, and it is an interesting game. It kind of reminds me of "Bruce Lee" in visual style, but it's definitely not as good. It's more of a puzzle solving game, which is fine. But there are issues:
- The music repeats over and over and over. It will get on your nerves.
- Figuring out what to do is not very obvious. I had to refer to on-line guides. How the heck could any casual gamer back then figure any of this out?
- Lots and lots of backtracking. Take this object over there, but you also need this other object, and since you can only carry one at a time....go back and get it.

Absolutely better. Good resolution and you get the full 2+ hour movie. On the downside, there is no novelty "Rick Roll" movie on PSP (that I know of).
-
Cool, you grabbed Michael T's bundle 👍 The price was great, and I was tempted because of some of the movies in the bundle, but I didn't want to go down the rabbit hole of UMD movie collecting. I already have my hands full with blu-ray, DVD etc.
PSP really was an entertainment powerhouse, but for whatever reason, Sony handhelds never remotely come near the success of Nintendo handhelds.
-
Yes. I'm actually shocked no one else grabbed that bundle!
I have a pretty nice PSP collection. The PSP is a lot more advanced than the Nintendo DS. Yet I still love the DS more. Why? Probably because the library is more accessible and large.
I normally take the PSP with me on plane trips with a few movies to watch. But this last time, since we hadn't flown in so long, I just minimized. Our plane ended up having a pretty good selection on seatback screens, so I just watched a bunch of TV shows and was happy. I started to watch that movie "The Joker", but it was so depressing, I turned it off.

Ebay has sent me a $25 discount (off a $25.01 or more purchase) for being a member since their beginning! Help me figure out what to buy.
I'm thinking about the following choices:
- An N64 or NES flashcart/everdrive
- One of the rarer 2600 carts that I don't have (Frankenstein's Monster, Gremlins, or ???)
- A 1200xl.
Help me find something good for a decent price!

I'm tempted to say the N64 or NES EverDrive, but my old buddy is super duper proud of doing the case design on the 1200XL and despite a few flaws it's my favorite Atari 8-Bit Computer. If you're going to go that route though consider the Atari XE Game System. The cartridge is easily accessible, it has 64K of RAM, a nice detachable keyboard, it's everything the 5200 could've been. But it's okay to have an XE and get a 1200 XL too 🤓
-
I went with a wildcard: Tempest for the 5200! Only $15 after that coupon.
Thanks for the ideas, I do appreciate it.

Free right now: Demon's Tilt for Windows. Thank you @Atari 5200 Guy for the heads up on this.
