The Professor got a reaction from Atari Creep in Caldor "Price Break!" Ad for Atari & ColecoVision - Friday, March 11, 1983
Here is a vintage Caldor newspaper ad for Atari and ColecoVision games. This ran in the Poughkeepsie Journal on Friday, March 11, 1983. I think it's interesting that they're advertising Donkey Kong for Atari 2600 in the ColecoVision section. It was a Coleco product, but better suited in the Atari section, not mixed in with ColecoVision games. That seems like it would be confusing to some. My first thought was "Why would they be advertising Donkey Kong on its own if it came with every ColecoVision sold?" Then I saw it was for the 2600. Also notice that by March, 1983 E.T. was already marked down to $14.76. E.T. had retailed for around $40 during the 1982 Christmas shopping season only a few months earlier. That's quite a price drop!

Caldor was a discount retailer that was popular in the North East during the 1970s and 1980s. Caldor could best be explained as K-Mart dressed up to look like JCPenny. The interior of each Caldor store was designed to look more like a department store than a discounter, and many were even designed by the same firms used by more up-scale retail environments. They featured wide aisles, bright lighting, and large, colorful display treatment, and were typically remodeled every 6 years. They were best recognized for "The Caldor Rainbow" with a mix of brown, yellow, and orange. Caldor struggled to compete against Wal-Mart and filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection in 1999. Here are some vintage pictures of Caldor:

here is my Atari 5200 Stargate prototype for your enjoyment. this is an official original prototype that came out of atari and is not a reproduction game. this is what Stargate would have been had atari put it out in 1984. enjoy,

Some takeaways from Hyperkin's Facebook live broadcast:

Hyperkin is striving for 100% compatibility with existing 2600 cartridges.
Compatibile with "the vast majority" of Atari 2600 peripherals and controllers.
While the prototype shown at E3 only has 2 switches (Reset and Select), the final production Retron 77 is going to have all of the switches that the original Atari 2600 had, and more.
One new switch will likely be for switching between aspect ratios of 16x9 and 4x3 video modes.
Hyperkin is still considering save states.
Retron 77 will likely support hot-swapping of cartridges without powering down the console.
Retron 77 plays games off the cartridges and does not store the ROMs on hardware. Hyperkin is striving to be fully legal and mindful of copyright issues.
Hyperkin is working on a new, more responsive controller for the Atari 2600.
Retron 77 will still ship with a classic joystick, and will have a classic controller available "for people who like it old school."
Hyperkin is monitoring the Atari Age forums for feedback. (I hope they see us too!)

Here's a comment from the post we made on our Facebook page about the Retron 77. Erik's comments are emblematic of a lot of what I've been seeing and a good example of the type of gamer Hyperkin is hoping to cater to with the Retron 77. For a lot of people it comes down to not believing / knowing how to hook a classic Atari console up to modern TV sets:

It's important to understand that some very new TVs have done away with coax and don't play nicely with the various A/V mods. I've experienced this with a mod that I did for a friend. I tried three different configurations before I found a mod that worked and then it was just "ok". Many of us in the community have CRTs or older flat screens so this isn't an issue for us. But for some who decide to get back into classic gaming and have already moved on to HD or 4K, the Retron 77 could be a great solution.

This ome im not too proud of. They had these giant mario stuffed toys (toad, mario, luigi, and DK). You had to win the game to get one. Bounce a basket ball off a bouncy backboard into a net. I spent $20 ($2 a game) and came out empty handed.

Later i found the same mario toys in a claw machine and threw some more money in it and still nothing to show for it

Excellent post Mojoatomic - thanks much!

You mention above using a scope to verify the RF section, and I was wondering if you would be willing to post a walk-through on how it is done?
I recently installed a new RF module in my heavy sixer (three pin RF module) and would like to tune it to the 61.25 MHz shown in the 2600 Field Service Manual.
