  1.   THERE IS TRUTH HERE

Why Spend $80 on an SNES Classic When You Can Install Emulators on a Raspberry Pi and Never Shut the Fuck Up About It?

    http://thehardtimes.net/harddrive/spend-80-snes-classic-can-install-emulators-raspberry-pi-never-shut-fuck/

Jokes aside there is a lot of truth to it. That all said here is MY stance on it all, I AM somewhat of a tinkerer and would never by any of the Nes / Snes Classic mini's myself though that is partly because I have issue with Nintendo's practices meeting demand and fulfilling promises to customers but I DO get it ;) . Otherwise though, this is my 2 cents worth -

You have a few specific types of people, the crazed Nintendo fanboy that would buy a potato as long as it had the "official" Nintendo branding, the collectors who also will buy simply because "NINTENDO" , the non- techy type, yes I know it is all very "easy" and I would do it myself but there are people who simply recall some fun and nostalgia and want to recapture that so they will buy for the look, branding, ease of use, just enough to satisfy the nostalgia and get that warm and fuzzy feeling. There are probably even those that will buy these and hack'em like they did the NES Classic (It wont be long the components are said to be practically identical ) and add even more roms to it. Those of us, myself included may find it odd anyone would choose the official Nintendo option and realize the madness of Nintendo shortages and how much more we can get for our money going the Pi or other emulation route but it does not matter, it will sell and sell out and there will always be people to buy these things, pretty sure those of us that might use a Pi are the minority compared to the millions of kids, parents, grand parents etc, that will pick up the official Nintendo Classics, I never would and I may feel I "know better" but the fact is we are not the target audience and Nintendo knows it as well. What IS great though is we have these options and so each individual can choose whichever suites them best, there is no right or wrong here.

    :spot:

Whichever route you go GAME ON and more power to you all! Is a great time to be a classic gaming fan!  B)

  2. Just to add for those wondering about the integrity / history of those currently involved with "ATARIBOX" here is something to consider posted now by Larry Bundy on Facebook - Pasted exactly from his original post

Anyone who is thinking in investing in that AtariBox, I seriously recommend you have a long, hard think about doing so.
The project is run by a man with a track record of abandoned kickstarters and using either Chinese knock-offs or over the counter items you could easily build yourself. He screwed up his USB memory wristband Kickstarter so much, he ended up sending all the backers an email on how to build them themselves >.>
Anyhoo, here's a video on his previous projects:
  3. I am hoping the factor that wakes people to reality is over pricing and the Indigogo RED FLAG, we will have to wait and see, priced right I would consider it just for the case and styling (knowing full well support is likely to be lame)  - overall ever since earlier talks about PC technology I have to say this is about EXACTLY what I was expecting, in other words a low powered PC hardware box with Linux core that streams with apps etc. THIS IS LIKE A THOUSAND OTHER STREAMING BOXES you can import from cheap Chinese sites like AliExpress / DX . com etc. It seems about the only thing that will set it apart (IF IT EVEN COMES TOGETHER AS THEY CLAIM) is the addition of bundled Atari games (emulated like on Android on I  am guessing) and a 2600 theme / styling.  Even just as that could have been a fun impulse grab at the right pricing level just for collectors purposes but it is sounding like that styling along with the logo / licensing and bundle of Atari games is exactly why they seem to feel they can waaaaaay over charge for this. If that is the case I think  I will  just get a similar device at a 3rd of the cost and simply slap on some woodgrain MAKtac, install my own emulated Atari games and call it a day. Sure it may not be "official" but it will be something likely almost as good if not better.

;)  TRY TO REMEMBER FOLKS THIS IS NOT REALLY "ATARI" IT IS SIMPLY A NAME / LICENSE / IP acquired by people looking to bank our love and nostalgia for the original company. Some, actually many people always seem to want to believe that it is something more, it really isn't. And hey that is fine, even I would buy into something like this merely for that Atari logo if it were priced at an impulse buy level but it does not look like that will be the case so imho buying into and supporting such crap tells these companies how gullible and accepting we are to buy into ANYTHING and ANY PRICE, vote with your dollars folks and send the proper message.

  4. It was a great system then, and it's great to collect now.  The games these days are plentiful and cheap.  Just an awesome system.  And I have to say, I think the PS2 controller is the pinnacle of gaming controllers.

The XBOX is technically a superior machine  It has a lot of the same games and a lot of them look better than the PS2 versions.  But for whatever reason, the PS2 is the system I keep out and play all the time.  I'm not sure why that is.  Maybe it's the controller.  Maybe it's the tiny size of the slim PS2.  Who knows?

Here's a fat model I got last week with a cool skin courtesy of an AtariAge member.  It was broken, but it's fixed now, and I've been playing a lot with it.

Hey that is awesome and a cool looking PS2! I would have loved one that was not the stock BLACK. Particularly a SLIM SILVER was something I really wanted but never got back when I still had the extra cash but I got an incredible deal on a modchipped PS2 SLIM that I simply could not pass up and since it plays everything I throw at it including PS1 games I do not regret it for sure but man I really wanted a colored PS2. I also LOVE the PS2 controller.  Of course there were also some good retro compilations as well.

  5. Obviously, I loved many of the 8 and 16 bit consoles but eventually the time of disc based 32bit consoles arrived and while disc based media increased loading times it still brought us CD based audio quality and storage capabilities we could only dream of previously. Being a HUGE fan of the original PlayStation and as much as I hated the fact it had a hand in sealing the fate of the Dreamcast I too could not resist buying into the PS2 hype and early releases proved poor to mediocre but once it found it's stride man there was a great library and just about every genre to please gamers.

  6. I certainly cannot argue that list, many greats for sure and they included Resident Evil 2 which for a CD based PS1 game was quite an accomplishment ! Many seem to dump on the N64 and maybe it has not aged great but that list is an example of great and fun titles on the N64 and reinforces imho that I made the right choice picking up an N64 Everdrive when I had the chance!  WIPEOUT64 and RIDGE RACER64 were interesting versions on N64 as well!

  7. And while it's not really a flashback, I do really enjoy the Retron systems (I have a Retron 3).  You'll see some folks refer to them as "Garbage".  Poppycock!  They play most games just fine.  And boy do they save a lot of space and wiring.  And they let you use original controllers.

I am not the biggest fan of my Retron 3 but I LOVE my SuperRetroTrio by RetroBit. I find the emulation more accurate especially for the NES. Not my video (I have the same black and Silver model) plus the controllers it came with are decent and it works with all three of my Everdrives.

  8. I cannot say I officially collect Flashbacks. THIS is my only Atari Flashback and really it is the only one I want, I lost interest in later models mostly as I prefer using one of many various original 2600 consoles and compatibles. I DO have both the Colecovision and Intellivision Flashbacks but was very disappointed when they released with controllers NOT backwards compatible with the original consoles out of the box. I MIGHT consider future releases IF they correct the controller compatibility as well as improve emulation but more likely will just stick with original consoles and Flashcarts.

  9. NOT my video but certainly fascinating as to what could have been!  :o

The Taito WOWOW: The Console That Never Was

    AE Redux

    Published on Feb 19, 2017
During the 16-bit era, a fierce battle was waged between Nintendo, Sega, and NEC, but did you know that Taito was considering entering the fray with a console of their own? In 1992, they announced the Taito WOWOW, a CD-based system that would make thorough use of satellite technology. The console never got past the prototype stage, but it's interesting to see Taito was floating such a system.
  10. Making lists and selections is stupid in a certain matter. You must neglect something important. ET, Raiders of the lost Ark, Riddle of the Sphinx and Demon Attack are also fine games, which have to be mentioned. But there are only ten tickets for the Super Bowl.

And I agree as I pretty much stated right at the start of my post  ;)  HOWEVER I was curious more about what people would personally list and indeed not only has everything listed been great choices but they also reflect the type of games each of us enjoy, as well I have been reminded of several titles I either forgot about or time or never tried the first time around and now have some to keep in mind the next time I feel like a 2600 fix.

  11. Re: Top 10 Atari 2600 Games - WAIT here me out, YES lists are stupid and pointless but I am just curious to see how everyone's compares and which titles seem to repeat or not ;) Anyone "old" and grew up with Atari 2600 like me? Of course even if you didn't grow up with it or came to discover it much later in life you are welcome to list your top 10 favs! Off the top of my head I will go with -

    1. Space Invaders.

    2. Vanguard.

    3. River Raid.

    4. Pitfall.

    5. Asteroids.

    6. Kaboom !

    7. Keystone Kapers.

    8. Demon Attack.

    9. Super Breakout.

    10. Missile Command.

:D Good times, feel like I grew up through the history of gaming and still love it!

  12. It was a fun game and good sequel to the Out Of This world game.

Funny thing that, while many assumed Flashback was the sequel to OUT OF THIS WORLD (it was so more in spirit only) the TRUE sequel was a SegaCD / MegaCD exclusive called Heart of the Alien, literally the true sequel as you can see. Just forward this video to the 4 min 34 sec mark to avoid lots of babble before that. The SegaCD contained the original game and the sequel but the original creator had nothing to do with it and it was not as good.

  13. Oh there are other reason for sure though of course most do not compare with modern offerings but back in the day with my humble a500 and the RF modulator which had a composite out I played around with several video and titling programs making basic titles for my home VHS movies, art and animation with Deluxe Paint, listening to tunes with MOD players, viewing scene demos (mix of video and sound) for kicks. All nostalgic purposes for sure but the sound and graphics capabilities were amazing on that machine for the time. Great sounding and looking games kept me going for a long time before getting a 16 bit console like Snes or Genesis and found many of the titles that DID crossover onto Genesis still looked and sounded better on AMIGA though some of that was made for on consoles faster cartridge loading I admit.

  14. Excellent, it is the little aesthetic touches I love that can really make a system stand out but you know Justin this post comes with a extra benefit for me at least. I have several Colecovision controllers of various condition but I have a couple where that aluminum sticker on the top of the joystick (much like the 7800) is either very worn or damaged or in some cases entirely missing I I had been wondering for some time now HOW I can fix this and where would I even find aluminum stickers the exact size needed, Well looking out your parts list I see I can easily make them for myself!! Problem solved. THANKS.  :thumb: Hell I might do my 7800 controllers in the same fashion you outlined here as well, looks great and I always fine it cool to be just a little different than other people as you noticed people catch on pretty quick when something looks different form stock.

  15. Sound off gang, what say you?

We got a dedicated thread I think you will appreciate. So far though not much to say outside of speculation and the current owners of Atari being more just copyright holders that whore out the name. Until we get past RENDERED IMAGES and vague specs we got nothing, here's hoping though.

  16. You know I actually have TWO Atari Jr's. MAYBE I will clean them up and combine the two so that one is clearly the better looking / performing stock model and the left over second unit maybe I can consider doing some sort of "mod" , nothing fancy as I am not that skilled but if the case is more worn perhaps a paint job or something. Always wanted to try my hand at something like that and would rather do it on a spare Jr. than a 4 or 6 switch. Hmmmm......
