  1. Well, I'm using a 2008 Toshiba Satellite designed for gaming...by 2008 standards.  It does have an nVidia GPU, suppose to have a Centrino but Windows 7 reports my system as having a Core 2 Duo, and 4 GB of RAM.  So far I have not had much issues running modern games from Steam like the truck simulator series from SCS Software (Euro Trucking 2, American Trucking).  I did try to install the GOG client but ran into a missing DLL issue which I am trying to resolve.  So far, no luck.

Hmm I do not know why that would be. I would try right clicking and install GOG client as admin. Also I am pretty sure the GOG installer installed Microsoft Visual C++ package as well but I cannot say which particular one so keep an eye out for that. Otherwise I don't know man, I have not had a missing DLL issue since XP days if I recall.

Worse case scenario even if the GOG client wont install for you you should STILL be able to claim the game and download the game installer direct from GOG website.

  2. Man, I clicked on that link to get the game, found out I had an account and discovered 15 more games I forgot I had.  It was like my birthday all over again!  At least three of those games are from the Ultima series!!  I was like, "Where'd these come from?"

    Thanks for sharing, MaxRD!

Hah I hear you man! I often forget my GOG library, I really should install the client on our new DELL laptop, with i5 CPU and 8GB ram it is better than my desktop.

  3. Many saw a Snes mini coming, they will pull same crap with limited availability feeding the scalpers market and make crying Nintendo fans. I will stick to the million other ways I have to play Snes roms,,,,,,,Personally I would only be interested in aN64 one because there are no N64 clones, oh not interested enough to get one or bother trying but I think it would be cool.

  4. Thanks! Much better

On my PC, they were right side up, but posted sideways. Did you have to do something other than a rotate?

You are quite welcome! I wondered if there was a way I could rotate them in place but if there is I have no idea, so I downloaded the sideways ones to my desktop, they appeared sideways even in the thumbnail, I just opened MSoffice Picture Manager, rotated to upright position and saved over original. After that the thumbnails also appeared upright.

I know images can be weird, I have a program that allows me to right click on the thumbnail of an image and choose to rotate left or right, they always look fine according to the thumbnail after that but when actually opening to view they are not always corrected lol. Honestly, I get nervous editing the structure of anyone's post so I was totally prepared to hit CANCEL if I could not correct them lol.

  5. UPDATE TO MY POST #40 - RE:ANDREW STEEL form HYPERKIN -

I want to thank everyone for their input and warm welcome. Your opinions are truly important, both personally for me and for our company.

We licensed an early version of Stella, and being fully aware of its certain technological issues, our software developers continue working hard to implement the promised features. We at Hyperkin fully understand that all the newer versions are subject to different license terms, and therefore plan to ship the product with our own build. Stefan, please contact us at developer@hyperkin.com, hopefully we can negotiate the opportunity to use your newer builds, for the sake of making the product better.

What we initially plan to offer is basically a convenient piece of hardware, with a properly configured and licensed Stella (early version). It will not include any other proprietary parts of Stella code from further revisions (unless we negotiate that with Stefan). That build is expected to have the full set of features I listed in my previous post, and hopefully some more.

As an additional tinker-friendly feature, we expect to leave an opportunity (for example in a form of a service port) to install other versions of Stella -- we honor everyone's IP rights, but since it's open-source, I believe users are free to rebuild and deploy any build of Stella they want.

Also, many of you requested 7800 compatibility. I cannot really promise that at the moment, but we are working on it.

    Thanks again for your support!
  6. Sharing this interesting post made today over on Atariage ;)

Hi guys, I'm Andrew Steel from Hyperkin. First I want to thank you all for your support, it means a lot to our company and to me personally. I'm very excited to work on this project, aiming to make it as good as it gets. That's why I'm here to share my thoughts and hear your opinions. We did license Stella and obtained a custom build with a few important improvements. As many of you noticed, there is a 2-seconds loading screen when you hotswap the game. It is actually there only to ensure the hotswap procedure happens smoothly. It is only a prototype for now, and we didn't want any hiccups to occur at E3. In the final version the loading screen will be gone, because I think normally users wouldn't mind hitting Reset if the console occasionally attempts to read the cart earlier than it's fully inserted.

It is a very challenging task to cover the vast library of games and homebrews. But I know that supporting certain things is cruicial, so we went an extra mile and developed a way to work with Harmony. I cannot guarantee that this feature will still be present in the final release due to certain potential legal concerns, but we all understand its importance to the scene and will do our best to keep it.

Our primary goal is to ensure good compatibility with real cartridges because well, they are awesome, and the 2600 is actually a quite affordable platform to collect for. Please message us with your contact info if you are willing to jump on board and offer your help with testing the system for compatibility. Also, since we officially partner with the scene, I would actually prefer for the system to be open-source. In my envision, it will ship with our own Stella build, hardware-wise prepared to be tinkered with -- just in case if someone out there wants to remove or add any features they want.

We understand that the system has to be affordable, so our target price is 50 USD, give or take. Too early to state it firmly and predict the costs, we are still working on the features. I think it generally would be a bad idea to add some extra hardware just to support a peripheral used in 2-3 games and make the system way too expensive, so we expect to go for a good balance of what it does and what it does not. Again, if you are willing to offer your help with that, even just an opinion, please don't hesitate and message me and our R&D department at developer@hyperkin.com.

As it is for now, I can confirm that our newest build has the following working physical buttons that we plan to bring to the front: reset, select, save, load; a few buttons on the back: difficulty, game mode, color/bw/scanlines, aspect ratio, glitch switch. As most of people who came to talk to me and to try to earlier prototype, it plays games in clear HD without any noticeable issues. As for the controller to ship with the system, we expect to stick to the classic design with a paddle wheel on the side or perhaps just around the stick. It's our own design but of course original joysticks will work as well. I'd personally refrain from anything D-pad based because if you want one, you can use a Genesis controller, but please feel free to share your thoughts. Now, the release date, we will try to make it happen before Christmas. It is also a very challenging plan, but we work hard to make it happen.

And for those of you who wonder in the previous posts, your humble servant is 32 :)

  7. I wont be disappointed as my expectations are based in a realistic view of modern "Atari" and the current market, in other words I am not expecting much at all

Atari CEO confirms the company is working on a new game console

"We're back in the hardware business," he said.

Chesnais declined to describe a lot of details about the console. But he said it is based on PC technology. He said Atari is still working on the design and will reveal it at a later date.

    https://venturebeat.com/2017/06/16/atari-ceo-confirms-the-company-is-working-on-a-new-game-console/

Based on PC Technology and able to emulate classic ATARI ? Finally!!!!!!!......oh wait.........been doing that for years........oh that's right, now it will have the "official" license from "Atari" which of course has nothing to do with the Atari we all knew and loved but hey, it's official! Just more whoring of the Atari brand to us desperate for Atari Nostalgia of years gone by. So far the Retron77 seems more interesting imho.

  8. No RetroN anything is needed but having a newer machine and a better image is nice. Our systems, modded or not, are getting old and tired. Cheap alternatives are always welcome and the fact that there is no crazy things needed to hook it up makes it easier with today's techknowledge. But the REAL reason I like this unit is not for all it can do but more so the IDEA of what it is. Maybe more interest might hit the market to preserve the history of the pre 8 bit systems and carts. A little respect for the older stuff. New 3rd party products such as affordable alternatives for the 5200/7800 controllers as only an example. Me personally I am SO SICK of NES/SNES love in the clone aftermarket of convenience, it is about time we 2nd generation console gamers were offered the same love and respect in the market. Last it makes playing Atari more accessible to the casual kat that wants to be nostalgic or share with their kid the amazing games of the 70's and 80's without the (small I know) issues that come with Flashback systems.

    Just my thought!

Well put man! Baby steps maybe but at least some things are finally happening to spotlight the 2600 era, hopefully is just the start. While I think such items are targeted to us older gamer/collectors I would love if the low cost and ease of connection and accessability may draw in younger folk who might not of previously considered anything prior to NES. IF IT STIRS ENOUGH INTEREST to influence even a small percentage of todays gamers to perhaps research and learn about the pioneering of modern gaming, some respect for it, that could be cool.

  9. Here is somewhat of an update from the author of that ENGADGET LINK -

I'm the author of the Retron 77 report... he told me they were thinking around $80, but hadn't decided yet (so yes, it can change... but that's definitely what he said).

I actually played it in 16:9... and their stand at the show lists "16:9" as a feature on the printed materials. Though he listed a number of modes to ensure authentic retro feel (black and white etc) so much of this is likely configurable, and original aspect ratio etc. And again... yes possibly subject to change. But the report is based on actual experience.

The image didn't look terribly stretched, but not sure what method they are using for upscaling etc. -

JUST SHARING INFO AS I SEE IT  ;)

  10. Saw this article yesterday:

    https://www.engadget.com/2017/06/13/atari-2600-retron-77/

This is saying 80 for the price? I also heard rumors that it is emulation and Harmony won't work. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how it shapes up, but still exciting news!

To be clear, what I posted did come from somebody who asked the person giving the demo of the prototype at E3 apparently. Obviously nothing is written in stone in such a case, myself I try not to get too excited over any info that far as is my skeptical nature. To be honest, I found it kind of telling that they said "should" work with the harmony part as often with such things I find they will say should because they don't want to flat out say WONT as that is a negative and of course they try to avoid being as negative as possible displaying an upcoming item but it is definitely emulation or I assume it must be because the selector and toggle switches etc supposedly are selected using the interface and not physical buttons so yeah, I was also surprised to read that it "should" work with the harmony. As for $40 being the price I was quite surprised to hear that as well that is really low, I could see it being for one of the cheap Atgames handhelds but for the first 2600 compatible console? I would be very surprised, so double definitely sounds more realistic a price. Anyway we have to take all information up to the release with a grain of salt hope for the best, I am just hoping it has decent compatibility and minimal to no lag while playing, anything else would surely be icing on the cake. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

  11. OK some of you have posted the pics floating around, screw it I will add all mine again lol, Posted by Dr. Manhattan on Atariage, yes some images are duplicated but it seems he has been sourcing some info as well which I will include here. The case looks a bit rough but keep in mind it was a demo unit thrown together for E3. Honestly, if the look remains but smoothed out that is fine and also hopefully the info so far is very promising imho, for the price and the features will certainly be worth considering and buying may encourage more such devices for us classic gaming enthusiast. It certainly seems like something we have been clamoring for.

    Estimated $40 price point.
    Should work with Harmony cart.
    No release date yet.

Currently does work with Harmony cart. This will remain pending legal dept approval.

Has 4x3 and 16x9 modes. Has color & b/w modes

    Built around Stella emulator

Will work with track balls, 3rd party controllers, etc.

The USB port is for power. Considering making it open source based on what they've seen from the Atari community. No save states yet. Hardware is very early. Input lag doesn't seem to be a problem. Had a very good run in both Atari Pac-Man and Missile Command. For an early prototype it's a very impressive product.
  12. I've yet to jump into purchasing a Harmony Cart.  It would probably save me lots of space (and money?) in regards to my collection..but i love me some Atari manuals and boxes.  My family is probably planning an intervention in the near future.  ;)

If this is emulation based I'm afraid you won't be able to use your Harmony Cart.  The Retron 5 didn't support multi-carts or even random bootlegs from back in the day.

I want to support Hyperkin jumping into making an HD Atari..but I can't help with be super skeptical at this point.  Fingers crossed they prove me wrong

Yes that is what I fear, that it will work in the same manner as the Retron5 literally dumping cart content to a ROM for it's own emulator use. I suspect that will be the case. I also thought the Retron 3 which I have is junk in build quality though it DOES support flashcarts. I went for the RetroBit SuperRetroTrio though instead of the Retron5 because that not only plays nicely with all my Everdrives (Snes / Nes / Genesis) built is pretty good in the compatibility and even comes with a pretty nice stock controller.
