R.I.P. Fry's Electronics.
Fry's closed all locations on Wednesday with no forewarning. It was one of the last places I could still buy electronics components in-person. Need a 7805 regulator for that ailing 2600? How about a few resistors for that AV mod? Replacements for a leaky cap? They had me covered without the wait of an online order.
It was a quirky, hodgepodge type store with a lot of "As seen on TV" products along side computer, electronics and stereo equipment. It shall be missed.

I agree. I'm going to miss them.
There's a lot of hate on-line about Fry's that I don't quite get. A lot of people lost jobs. And I'm really going to miss being able to go and actually see and touch the items I need. Sometimes, you need that ability to help decide how to solve a particular problem.
Fry's. R.I.P. You will be missed.

One of the only stores I would just go to just to browse/walk around.
Each store, perhaps a bit outdated, had a decore and even store exterior around a theme with my favorites being the Aztec and ancient Egypt. For example in the Egypt theme store had some computer display desks where supported by large black ancient cats rather than desk legs and hieroglyphics on the walls.
Will also miss going there to find cables that other stores don't stock in store.
For the year prior the pandemic could tell it was going down hill fast as the shelves were half empty and with poor online solution could tell they were not going to make it long when the pandemic hit.

Have you tried Console5? They might have what you are looking for. :O)

From the maker of the excellent Donut Dodo comes Cash Cow DX! I highly recommend checking out the demo on Steam available now as a part of Steam Next Fest. I didn't wrap up work until 9 (budget season) and as soon as I logged off, I downloaded this and played for 45 minutes straight. With a game over every 3 minutes or so, that's 15 games! I did eventually make it to level 1-2. LOL
Anyway, if you like Donut Dodo, check it out !

Why is Road Runner for the 2600 so freakin' hard?! It's killing my wrist!

I've never played it. Does it play like Decathlon?

It's pretty cool. Avoid Wile E. Coyote and eat lots of bird seed. It keeps your energy up. There are obstacles as well, like cliffs, bombs, etc. It's a good facsimile of the arcade version, for the A2600 anyway. Both the arcade and A2600 versions were developed by Atari.

I’m not the right demographic for the 2600+ (because I don’t have anything that takes HDMI anymore), but I still think it looks pretty awesome. Glad you’re having a good time with it.

PSA: Get a free copy of the original Haunted House (2600) on your Atari VCS!
-
It works! Thanks.
-
It still works!
Be aware that the code is cap sensitive. I initially entered all the letters in lower case because I couldn't be bothered to turn on all caps 😂 and it didn't work.

PSA: Rumor on the street is that the Atari VCS store XMAS holiday sale kicks off tomorrow, 12/19. So if you own a modern VCS and have been looking to add a few titles to the library, keep your 👀 open!

When I saw the recent homebrew drop at AtariAge this morning my wallet screamed and slid itself under the couch...

7800 guy here, checking in. Knight Guy looks fantastic. Shows that every bit of a classic NES game can be done nicely on the 7800 with some effort.

Currently playing IS3 on the PSOne. I was a huge fan of the Jaguar games and this takes everything developers Eclipse Software learned on the two earlier titles and cranks it to 11. Like IS2, it's a bit on the hard side but still very enjoyable. IS3 was also on the Nuon.
Any fans of this or the other IS games?
-
Oh that's awesome. I've been having fun with the few minutes I have had with Jaguar IS. To know there's an even better version on PS is good to know. I'll have to look for that one.
I was a HUGE fan of PC MechWarrior back in the day. The mech games are a lot of fun.

The PSOne version is easier/more enjoyable to control than the Jaguar version. But it is harder overall. I really like the series and rank it just behind Armored Core. It's a slower type of combat but lots of fun.
If you ever get the PSOne version, be sure to use a CRT. The textures look stunning on a CRT but super muddy on a HDTV - even through an upscale. The Jaguar games look great on both since they are mostly flat shaded polygons with some bitmaps textures.
-
Loved IS on Jaguar, missed IS2, never knew IS3 was released on the PSOne. Like @RickRsaid... I'll have to look for it.

Where did you play that at? The arcade scene in the greater Seattle area is pretty lame.

@socrates63this was at a Dave & Busters. They had a lot of fun retro updates. Space Invaders, Giant PAC-MAN and Galaga, Four Player PONG, a new version of Rampage based on the recent film. Centipede was my favorite of the bunch despite the lack of a track ball.

Never heard of it, but it looks cool. It’s crazy how far 3D Star Wars games have come since Star Wars Arcade.
Speaking of which, that would make a really cool VR game.

Looks gorgeous 👍 I've seen a couple of YouTube videos, and it looks like an awesome Star Wars game.

Apparently Nintendo is filming a commercial on Saturday in our building. Maybe this is my chance to be discovered? Too obvious if I come decked out in a Zelda t-shirt? 😂

RIP Harry Anderson of Nght Court. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/16/obituaries/harry-anderson-dead-night-court.html
-
He went too young.
Here's the thing about Harry Anderson. He was funny in a very sweet and kind way. Not an ounce of meanness in his public persona. And that's a rarity. Especially in comedy.
-
I grew up watching Night Court. Always liked Harry. Sad to hear another good one gone.
-
I'm so sad he's gone.

There is nothing like getting a new game, sticking the Bluray into the slot and then waiting 40 minutes for the most recent patches. The joy of modern gaming.
-
Ain't that the truth.
There's also that moment when you are informed that your hard drive is full. WTF.
-
I hear XBOX One consoles can take a couple of days from the first time they are turned on until the user can actually play a game setting itself up and installing any updates.
-
Having DLCs on physical disc doesn't help either. Wife and I bought the Borderlands Triple Pack which contained all DLC for all three games on discs. Took all night to install those so we had to wait a day to play a game. Yep...cart games have their advantages sometimes.

What version of Pac-Man are you playing for Atari National Pac-Man Day? I'm going to go with the homebrew versions of Jr. Pac-Man and Super Pac-Man on the 7800!

So I'm setting up to play Hover Strike:UL on the Takara Dynovisor and my wife says, "That's why you're being so nice to me. You were trying to make it hurt less when you drag that thing out. It's never going to be ok." I feel like the Dynovisor is my "leg lamp." I only wish I had won it as a major award.

One of my wife's former colleagues in NYC posted a pic of her fiancée wearing his new HTC Vive in the living room with a comment about how she can't believe she's marrying someone who bought this thing. I sense a lot of battles across the globe on the horizon. Is this what will kill VR in 2016?

lol that's hilarious! =D

If you've ever ordered from Best, this article will resonate. There are also some quotes from @Video 61.

Great article. I love BEST. I do feel that twinge to "be careful" when I do order, but actually speaking to Bradley is always a pleasant experience for me.

I've ordered two or three times from both Best and V61. I never knew about getting banned from Best 😆. I always followed the instructions and things went smoothly.
My last purchase had a minor hiccup because of a comment I made on the phone. Since he didn't take paypal, I called in to give him my credit card number. Well, I mistakenly called during non-business hours, and naturally, no one answered. I got a hold of Bradley on a later call and made the mistake of mentioning that I had called once previously and no one picked up. He seemed slightly annoyed 😄
Lance, on the other hand, has been much more cordial and easier to buy from 😄

Here's quick video montage celebrating Atari's Breakout!
Which version of Breakout was your favorite?

Super Breakout on the 2600! Or Warlords if that counts.
