Scores must be achieved between August 15th through August 31st, 2021. Screen captures are not allowed as they are more easily manipulated for falsified scores. Multiple submissions are permitted. The player with the highest score at the end of the competition is the victor!

Eligibility

Anyone can join in. All players are welcome!

Play Rules

Games may be played on real hardware, Flashback / Mini console, or emulation, using any controller or keyboard, following all rules and game settings defined in the challenge. Choosing between real hardware or emulation, and choosing which controller to play on is part of formulating your strategy. Enhancements, rewinds and hacked versions of this game are not allowed.

Difficulty Level

We are playing "Ultimate Asteroids" using Game 8, Difficulty A. These settings provide for a more advanced, challenging level of gameplay with increased speed, Hyperspace, no extra lives, and the addition of UFOs.

Fair Play

Your integrity is everything. Players should play fairly, be honest, and have fun! Falsified scores will result in your immediate removal from the site. It goes without saying that we will not allow cheats, hacks, cartridge frying, enhancements, rewinds, deceitful photo manipulation, subterfuge, or any other unfair advantage. Everybody hates a cheater.

Message

Welcome to our 106th Squad Challenge!!! For this challenge we're remixing a classic, applying "Ultimate" settings to Asteroids on the Atari 2600 the same way we've applied "Ultimate" settings to Yars' Revenge before!  We're getting out of our comfort zone and playing "Ultimate Asteroids" using Game 8, Difficulty A - settings that provide for a more advanced, challenging level of gameplay with increased speed, Hyperspace, no extra lives, and the addition of UFOs. Do you have what it takes to blast your way through the Asteroid field and come out the other end of this Squad Challenge victorious? Asteroids was released for the Atari 2600 in 1981 and for decades has been one of my most beloved games of all time. Sometimes playing on default settings can get a little old, so we try to invent fresh approaches to playing these classic 2600 titles. ROM and PDF Instruction Manual are provided below. I hope you all have fun, and good luck to everybody participating!

NOTE: We have a supreme lineup of games coming your way for High Score Squad in 2021! Expect a nice mix of classic Atari home console games in the rotation along with games from other classic systems! Here's a look at some upcoming events:

September: An Atari Lynx game

November: A Sega Genesis game

December: 2021 F-ZERO Championship, plus a game for Atari Jaguar!

Plus many more great games! (Schedule subject to change)

You have reminded me that I can use the Asteroids button controller for this.  Which will be a lot of fun.

'cause of THIS post , I thought the "astroblast" button on my Starplex controller would work ... it doesn't :wreck-it-ralph_anim:

Anyways I used the Starplex controller as I was getting phantom-hyperspace shots using the Wico thing on my rig. I was also getting unwanted hyperspace jumps with a rebuilt cx-40 (with cx-10 clicky board inside ) I could have managed with that but I wasn't trying to make "The Kessel Run"

I played with the Starplex controller. I wish the controller I traded with you by Retrogameboyz would have worked better for me. I found that I prefer the buttons on that one over the Starplex buttons.

love that setup @RickR!! 🙌 🕹️

Thank you.  @socrates63traded that sweet Retrogameboyz controller to me.  It's so much fun!  It's amazing how natural that 5 button layout feels for us old-timers.  And the buttons need to be TOUGH.  I slap that "hyperspace" button like an excited contestant on Family Feud!
