You're already beating me! I'll have to give this another shot this week!

I love stuff like this. I love the artwork, this looks like it could be straight out of Tim Lapetino's "Art of Atari".

It says in the manual that pressing start calls the truck. So mash that button before the road widens.
I should try giving those things a read once in a while

That game is brutal.
It absolutely is! A lot of fun! My main strategy was just to keep my speed down to "cruising speed" and take my time so I didn't crash.
10 hours ago, kamakazi20012 said:I do believe if you hit either the Select or Start buttons it can sometimes call up a weapon truck. Sometimes. Seems random.
I've never heard of that trick, I'll have to give that a try! Seems plausible since there must be some reason the Pause button was moved to the second controller. Maybe there's more going on here? Seems like we have a mystery on our hands fellas.

Honorable Mention Greenween!
Congratulations @greenween on a score to be proud of! The score wasn't posted before the Squad Challenge came to an end, but there's still plenty of "nerd cred" to go around. Great to have all of you participating!

🎃 MESSAGE: Welcome to our 71st Squad Challenge! We're getting into the spooky spirit of Halloween by playing Splatterhouse, an absolutely horrific game on TurboGrafx-16. This is one of the TG's best! Splatterhouse was a big draw to players first coming over to the TurboGrafx-16 from NES. This is NOT a Single Life Run, play it full-out and enjoy the spookiness. Remember, you can play TurboGrafx HuCards on TurboGrafx-16, TurboExpress, and TurboDuo! I hope you guys enjoy this Squad Challenge and have a great October. ROM and Instruction Manual are provided below. Good luck to everyone playing!

Congratulations RadioPoultry!
Congratulations @RadioPoultry on your fantastic score! I hope you guys enjoyed that super spy action in Spy Hunter! I hadn't played this game in years, it was nice to pick it up after such a long time. It was always one of my favorite games to play on the NES growing up. You guys posted some seriously impressive scores on a very challenging game. @RadioPoultry posted an astronomical score of 100,715 points! Unreal! I ranked 2nd place on the board with a score of 64,330 points, @kamakazi20012 took the 3rd position with his A-game of 39,470 points, @RickR took 4th with a solid showing of 22,125 points, and @Atari Creep rounds things out with an impressive 15,510 points. Congrats to @RadioPoultry and everyone who jumped in to play in this squad challenge and shared a score! Radio should be very proud of his accomplishment and I'd like to encourage him to post his new high score on the Scoreboard, and let's make sure this Challenge continues on!
NOTE: Our next High Score Squad Challenge will be a Halloween challenge for the TurboGrafx-16. Be there!

I guess I could have put it in the Atari 2600 forum instead of the homebrew forum, though its a prototype and not a homebrew. I'm just used to covering homebrews and hacks. 😉
You did great @Arenafoot! This overlap between Homebrew Forum and 2600 Form etc. has been a paradox that we've been trying to sort out for a while and make a change. When I put the site together I created the Homebrew Forum thinking this would be THE place where people go to talk about the Homebrew scene. A lot of people post to the 2600 Forum instead, (or whatever forum the system is that the homebrew is for.) I've considered making the Homebrew Forum exclusively for development, but that seems just as confusing. Your posts are fine either way, just needed to merge two great conversations into one.

Not a problem! You guys are posting great content and I'm grateful to have you guys here! 🙌 Sometimes we just need to tidy up a bit when we have duplicate threads on the same topic.

I'm not going to be eligible for NSG's October Giveaway (thanks for hosting it here this month @nosweargamer!) but my favorite scary game is Splatterhouse for TurboGrafx-16! Runner-up would be the original Atari arcade version of Gauntlet if you consider that spooky.

Dang it. I had 50,490 points but my web cam was too slow to catch the photo because of it's 3, 2, 1, count down. And I can't remove that feature for whatever reason.
What's worse is the Pause button doesn't appear to work on Spy Hunter. Is there something I'm missing? I can't pause my game. I'm playing a real game on real hardware.

Hey guys, having some fun with this game today. I just made it to an ICE LEVEL! I ignored the Boat House and kept driving regularly, passed the 4th or 5th bridge, keeping to the left I believe, and suddenly the forrest turned to snow, the road turned to ice, and driving became increasingly difficult! If you find yourself in an ice level use your instincts, slow down, and drive in the game the same way you'd drive on an icy road in real life. I managed to get past it but just barely.
New High Score: 63,615
A FEW MORE TIPS:
1. You can manipulate the helicopter. Either to shoot it down, take out opponents cars, or avoid it entirely. I have found three strategies for this:
A.) The Surface-to-Air Missiles give you 3 shots. Shooting down the helicopter can be a little tricky, but once you get the strategy down it can be consistent. Either line up right under the helicopter and maintain the same speed as the helicopter before firing your missile, or bring your car to a complete stop in the middle of the road and fire at the helicopter. You'll hit it and bring it down.
B.) If you don't have Missiles you can pull in front of an enemy car (even a bulletproof one) go just fast enough so that enemy car doesn't touch you but comes close to your rear bumper, wait for the helicopter to drop it's bomb, and as soon as it does move out of the way. The helicopter's bomb will hit the road and leave a hole in the pavement which the car behind you will drive into and destroy itself.
C.) You can manipulate the helicopter by really confusing it. If you're driving at cruising speed when the helicopter approaches you (somewhere around half speed) wait for the helicopter to come close, and then floor it to top speed. The helicopter will speed up and have a difficult time keeping up with you. Just as soon as it comes close, slam on the brakes as hard as you can and come to a complete stop. The helicopter will fly forward off the screen. As soon as your car comes to a stop, get going again and get your car back up to cruising speed. The helicopter will come back down and try to get you. Repeat this tactic another time or two and you should be fine. It's fun to confuse the helicopter.
2. Shoot the Limousine first. The limo is worth more points than almost everything else. The helicopter is worth more, but you see a lot more limos than helicopters. Target those limos and fire! It's not a bad way to rack up points.
3. Go easy on the Oil Slick to get the most out of it. I used to love holding that oil slick down and letting it flow. Not anymore. Just tiny little dabs. Move in front of the car you want to use the Oil Slick on and tap the button. It just takes one little squirt of Oil to slide an enemy car off the road. You have a limited amount, so save your Oil to use as often as you can on other cars and your Oil will last you a long time.

I think I've learned quite a bit from watching your videos, so thanks for that. I want to try again very soon. Sadly, I lost my hard drive last night. I'll have to restore everything, including my emulators. Will try ASAP.
I think the main issue I've had with the game is going way too fast. And now I see you also need to avoid shooting the "light-blue" cars too! Dang. I'm dense.
One other thing I need to highlight is that the light blue car is also on your team and you will apparently be penalized by shooting the light blue car as well. It's a little confusing, but it's the way the game plays. So, to recap:
FRIENDS:
Red Cars
Red Motorcycles
Light blue car
ENEMIES:
All dark blue cars

Here is a video of my performance from Thursday. This was my first time playing the game in 15-20 years and you can see me struggle in the beginning. Eventually I'm able to post a score of 54,820, find the Boat House and have fun playing the game. I didn't really have a strategy to begin with, but after playing it I came to realize two basic things:
1. Speed is my strategy. You gotta hit that sweet spot, so you can drive swiftly but don't crash. The longer you can stay alive, the more points you can acquire. Drive this car like you would drive on the highway, just because you can go super fast doesn't mean you want to. This is one of those rare driving games where you can consistently drive super fast without having to build up turbos, etc. The car can always just go super fast. I wouldn't always drive super fast though, because it's easier to crash into the back of a car or tree rather than just tap it and keep going. There's not a timer on this game, and you don't have to complete it within a certain time. What you don't want to do is crash and lose a life. My advice: slow down a bit, maneuver through traffic better, and save top speed for when you absolutely have to outrun someone.
2. Don't shoot red cars. That's friendly fire. Although red cars don't help you attack dark blue cars, the red cars and motorcycles are supposedly your friends. If you shoot them, the game penalizes you by preventing you from scoring points for a few moments and that hurts your overall score. (Apparently the light blue car is on your side too.) Try to only take out the dark blue cars or you will be penalized.
I hope this helps! Good luck everyone!

My High Score: 54,820 performed before an audience streaming on Instagram Live. This was a fun stream, @Atari Creep was there and I found the Boat House and was able to play as the Speed Boat for a little while towards the end. In 30 years of owning this game I don't think I've ever done that! The Speed Boat part was tricky, but very cool to see!

I think that would be a terrific idea @RickR! We will be hosting TurboGrafx-16 Squad Challenges at least 2-3 times a year, so I expect you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of that system.
