Yes you have. I am James Campell on there formerly Jim's Retro Zone.

Ah, I thought I recognized you. I think it was a top 5 2600 games list. I don't remember what number one was, but I remember that Star Ship was on there and you talked about never having Space Invaders as a kid.

Well, since you are new here, why not go introduce yourself over at the Atari I/O Clubhouse?

    https://forums.atari.io/forum/59-introduce-yourself/

And while you're at it we also have a YouTube community page you could take part in.

Glad to have you here, @James Campbell Jr.. I think you'll enjoy it. :atari_2600:

The same developer made Space Rocks, a better Asteroids than Asteroids itself. It was to play Space Rocks that I got my all-button “Asteroids” controller made. I think I have the rom for that if you’re interested. Darrell Spice Jr. posts the rom files himself.

I could use the ROM for that, if it isn't too big of a hassle for you. I used to love 2600 Asteroids, but have frankly gotten too good at it! I am able to roll the score over with ease on the default mode and play until my finger hurts from shooting and I get bored. It's better on the later settings and with the difficulty in A for UFOs. I didn't know UFOs were in this port until I read the manual when I first got my 2600 system. I was like, "WOAH!" when I figured that out!

I just built a simple circuit on a scrap bit of prototyping board, but I recently found out that EdLaddin makes a board for building your own 7800 arcade sticks  (I think @HDN had posted about them).

Yes, I did, back when I was considering buying a 7800. Now, I own one, but I digress. If anyone is interested, it is $15 over at the AtariAge Store.

  4. Thanks so much for the ROM, @socrates63. I'm putting this onto my SD card just now. I just realized this is a 2GB card. Wow, it sure is crazy how tiny these games are; this thing has hundreds of games from the 2600, NES, SNES, and Genesis on it!

Bosconian is one of my favorites in the arcade. It is a shame it didn't really take off. I have yet to play on real Arcade hardware. Some of my favorite quotes from the game are:

    "Cndshn RED! Cndshn RED!"

    "Blasht... Ahhfv!"

    And who could forget...

    "Battle Shpayshion."

I got off emulation, which is what was used to create the videos before, and tried on real hardware.  HUGE difference. 34,510!  My best yet.  Nothing beats the real deal.20200904_205736.jpg.5a75d86f7054229c702e580bf33d54f0.jpg

I will start playing on real hardware soon. Just heard from @RickR that he got my thing and is sending the game. What a nice guy.

So, I am a little obsessed with building my own controllers because parts are so readily available and cheap!

I have told y'all about my plans to build a 7800 arcade controller before, but I recently had another idea. I have a broken 2600 controller board and have thought about making a Dragster controller with nice, clicky, microswitched buttons. You only need up, down, fire and left for that (one of the traces is broken on the left joystick position, but I could probably rewire to the right button). Of course, I will have to actually GET Dragster first. It's quite fun now that I know what I'm doing.

@Atari 5200 Guy How is Galaxian on the 5200? It has long looked interesting because of its analog control. It looks like a blast with one of those paddle-modded 5200 joysticks.

  6. You know, I was actually just going to make a topic tion 3D All-Stars. I wish they put in the effort to remake the games like they did in the OG All-Stars, but whatever. I do wish they brought over Mario 64 DS's multiple features though. HUGE missed opportunity there (My favorite Mario game actually, second favorite game overall behind Super Metroid). I also don't like the limited release thing. Scalpers are a big concern.

As for the Game and Watch, meh. I'm a huge fan of G&W and retro handhelds, but this seems like a cash grab Famiclone. I wish they rereleased the original Super Mario Bros. Game and Watch instead.

Overall OK, but nowhere near as hyped as I was for Mario Maker on his 30th.

Thanks and I definitely will check it out. Been too long since I was part of a forum. Can't wait to see everything here. Thanks.

I've never been in a forum before this one. I joined at the same time as @socrates63 did, also because of @nosweargamer. Both of them are great dudes. Actually, everyone I've met here has been great. I think you will enjoy it here. We'd love to hear your Atari story.

I haven't played the hack yet, but I understand your point.

Galaxian on the 2600 is good.  I really like the way the swooping aliens move.  It's a good approximation of the arcade version.  Plus, it's difficult yet fair, just like the arcade version.

On the minus side, they didn't get the sounds right at all.  Those iconic sounds are a huge appeal of the arcade version to me.  The orange border is kind of weird, but when you play the game, I don't notice it at all.

I take it the hack doesn't really address the minuses at all?

No, not really. It got rid of the border, but the sounds are the same. It also seems to be a bit more sluggish, but that might just be me or my emulator. The arcade version wasn't very fast, but it didn't have those massive gaps between the aliens. It also flickers a bit more on the Galaxip, as it's now multicolored. Overall, nothing to write home about. Complaining about the border is stupid, because like you said you don't notice when playing. It's like pillarboxing or letterboxing in a video game or movie.

  9. Let's take a moment to recognize how good food is. Every country has something delicious to offer, even those weird northern European countries with the super bland food. Think about it: Germany has the sausages,  Mexico has tamales, The Middle East has falafel, Italy has all those very winey pasta dishes, Korea's got kimchi, Japan has sushi, England has savory pies, America has the hamburger and obesity, Canada has poutine, et cetera, et cetera. The point is food is good. Mmmm.

  10. I have played the arcade hack before. My problem with it is that there is no incentive to play it for me. It looks almost as good as the arcade, but plays and sounds exactly like the VCS original. Sure, it looks nicer, but in this day and age why not just play a better port? It's not too terribly impressive for the system, like something like DK VCS or whatever. I know I'm in the minority here, and for all of you who grew up with the originals they probably seem amazing, but for me, if it's the same game gameplay-wise I'm going to go with the original. Plus, I heard yellow borders are the new hot trend.

  11. I love it when this guy posts. Always fun to watchI forgot to mention this, but I have gone and tried this game out. It really is wuite fun when you know what the heck you're even doing! He's right about the mobile game loop thing, but I usually don't care much for mobile games. Dragster is pretty good though.

  12. For some reason, in a tenth-grade English class, we had to make self portraits as a sort of an ice-breaker type activity. I decided to make mine in Video Graffiti on the Surround cartridge (mode #13). Since I don't own the cartridge, I decided to use my trusty Wii and emulate the game! I also decided to stretch my TV out to 16:9, the greatest sin in all of Retro Gaming. The reason I did this was the pixels seem to be slightly rectangular; the width is shorter than the length. I have decided to post the picture here as no one in that class (not even the teacher, N64/PS1 generation there) can truly appreciate the work I did here. I don't want to brag or anything, but I think I did a pretty good job for my first try. This took me about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to complete altogether, as I used graph paper to graph it out first.

If anyone wants to try this out or do some other kind of drawing, just remember: the resolution from what I can tell is 39 pixels wide and 20 pixels tall. Hold the button down on game 13 to erase (game 14 is like an etch-a-sketch). Be sure to spray your Video Graffiti here-- just don't get caught by the cops!

And another little interesting thing.  The manual is also multi-language, and the back lists "International Division" with the Crossman Ave address.  It's also dated 1983.

    Nosotros somos las Galaxians.

    El mision: destruir Los extraterrestres.

Edit: a big sorry to those who actually speak Spanish for offending the language with my utter lack of Spanish-speaking skills.

  14. 14,980. I'm improving. Sorry it's so blurry.

By the way, is it just me that is bothered when people say the aliens are the Galaxians? Even the back of the 2600 box says that. But in the arcade it says WE are the Galaxians. Mission: Destroy aliens. I mean it could be the aliens that are talking because technically earthlings would be aliens to them, but on the arcade attract mode it also says "Bonus Galaxip for x points." So the Galaxip is your extra ship, so that confirms you play as the Galaxians. The aliens I always assumed were the Galaga. I think it mentions something about that in Galaga or the arcade manual, but don't quote me on that.

The cartridge on mine is the old style with the full locking dust cover.  Here are more pictures.  The back of the box is an international style.  I don't think I have any other boxes like this.

I didn't know they made 2600 carts in the 7800 style without the shielding.  I have a Jungle Hunt like that. I thought it was broken or something until I got my 7800 earlier this week and saw PPII was the same! Now that I look at it, I see the plastic spear thingies in there are a completely different shape than the spears in the shielded carts! Silly me. It does say 1988 on the cartridge.
