Welcome to our 150th Squad Challenge! This month we're playing R-TYPE on the Sega Master System! Special thanks to @Atari 5200 Guy for nominating this game! ROM and PDF Instructions are attached below. A note about ROMs in High Score Squad: as the Atari landscape is quickly changing, we won't always be able to attach a ROM file for High Score Squad Challenges in the future. I will always do my best to include the best PDF Instructions available, and a ROM when possible. If you ever have trouble locating a ROM and need one, you can always PM one of us and we can help point you in the right direction. Good luck!

Congratulations RickR!
Congratulations to @Marco1019 on another incredible victory! Squad Legend Marco takes the top spot in our Final Standings with an outstanding score of 43,669 points. Incredible! @socrates63 is back in action and hot on Marco's tail, closing out in 2nd with an absolutely stellar 42,042 points! @Atari 5200 Guy fought valiantly for 3rd Place and takes it with 32,804 points. "The Mayor" @greenween comes in with 26,969 points to take 4th, and "The Don" @RickR takes 5th Place in our Final Standings with a cool 18,463 points. Squad Challenge newcomer and VCS Legend @Mockduck scored 15,704 points to take 6th Place on the board. @Mockduck receives an asterisk* next to his name in the Final Standings as he posted his 7800 Centipede score in the Club VCS Recharged Squad Challenge for Centipede: Recharged - but Mockduck posted his score on time and played in good faith, and we want to acknowledge his gamesmanship and be sure his 7800 Centipede score is included with the rest of ours. Welcome to High Score Squad @Mockduck! We also welcome back once again recent Squad Challenge newcomer @Smell Dawg who takes 7th Place with a strong showing of 15,625 points. @TrekMD beams up with 11,370 points, taking 8th Place, and VCS Guru @Sabertooth fought a fierce battle, taking 9th Place with 10,470 points.
We had a great Double Feature this month with the Atari 7800 and the VCS! As always I'd like to encourage the legendary @Marco1019 to post his high score on the Scoreboard, and let's make sure this Challenge continues on! Congratulations once again to Marco for his BIG WIN, and I want to thank both @Gianna for nominating this game, as well as @Sabertooth for hosting the other end of this Double Feature in Club VCS!
COMING UP NEXT IN HIGH SCORE SQUAD: Our next Squad Challenge is R-TYPE for the Sega Master System. Be there!

Agreed but it's so easy to just attack it that that is what they do. If they were giving constructive feedback, that'd be different but that's not what people do.
Totally agree. I hope this perceived backlash doesn't discourage Atari from continuing to deliver hardware options compatible with legacy systems. Atari deserves credit for shipping actual products, which is unlikely to happen with Amico.

It's become common to see people call it "absolute trash" or "seriously flawed" (those are both actual quotes I saw on Facebook today). You get the idea. It's been labeled as "bad" or "dumb" before it's even released just because it does emulation. This kind of goes back to the bad Jaguar youtube video thread. NES/SNES classic both didn't use real hardware. Did they get labeled as "trash" because of this? No. Atari gets attacked for no reason.
People need to chill. How great that Atari is making an effort. There are legitimate issues that can be discussed but people need to relax and act like adults.

It seems to be the same with the 2600+ for some reason.
What's the viscousness over the 2600+ about?

Here's my review of Shark! Shark! which was originally going to be on the Amico. It give you a taste of what the system would have offered.
@nosweargamer Thank you for sharing some of your coverage of the Amico In my opinion, you've had the best, most objective coverage of everything that's happened.

My preferred method for playing 2600 games is the 7800. That's my default. I think the best looking 2600 system is the 2600 Jr. My favorite was the Atari 2700, but that's not really an option. The 4-switch is the icon, but the Vader looks so mean. Yet who doesn't like a Heavy Sixer?

I think this was sold in Europe!
That would make sense.
Lynx, Jaguar, and even 7800 would've benefited greatly from some good promotions. Giveaways to kids on Double Dare, etc. Imagine going up against Game Boy "oh but we have Lynx on START Cereal this month!"
-

Of course it's "Kellog's START" or some random cereal nobody's heard of. They couldn't have chosen Frosted Flakes or Fruit Loops or Cap'n Crunch for Atari to promote the Lynx. How many kids were eating "START" back in the day? They probably chose it because it had the same name as the ST Magazine.

Those are great scores, @Mockduck! If you're participating in our 7800 Centipede High Score Squad Challenge you'll want to be sure to post your 7800 score there where everybody else is playing 😀

Looking at the homebrew sequel called Failsafe for the VCS!
Failsafe is a terrific continuation of Countermeasure and looks like it would be right at home on the XL or XE Atari 8-Bit Computers. I'm thrilled to see Atari making this game available at a reasonable cost to VCS players. Thanks for another fantastic review @Mockduck

Especially with 2600 games sometimes owning a game for the box art alone is reason enough.

I fully agree a good selection of pack-in titles would have made a far better impression, always nice to get some good titles to kick off a new pick-up, they probably could have done some focus market testing before selecting the pack-in titles. I think if instead they could of hit it out of the park if the pack in multi cart contained some top tier original beloved games and hey why not one of the better modern homebrews just as a nice gesture? Would have been a great way to justify anyone giving it a chance.
I appreciate Atari making a sincere effort here. I've dreamed of them doing this since the '90s and now it's here.
Missile Command, Yar's Revenge, Adventure I understand. The rest are a bonus, but games like Combat, Dodge 'Em and Surround could be left off entirely in favor of a single gorgeous 2600 game that comes close to delivering "arcade-like gameplay", such as Millipede, etc. If you're buying a system capable of playing Atari 7800 quality games, there should be at least one game included that's at the level of a Millipede.
It's possible they are saving games like Millipede for future Multicart paks that they will release, or potentially another "Enhanced" release such as what they're doing with Berzerk.
There's also huge potential for brilliant new games to be developed for the 2600+ that take advantage of 7800 graphics, build on existing Atari IPs and help redeem Atari's story arc. Imagine Atari supporting the 2600+ with a new 7800 cartridge like "Swordquest: Timeworld" as a new adventure game that could give Legend of Zelda a run for its Rupees.

@Justin - Stargate is now Warner IP (through their 2009 acquisition of Midway). Those licenses are long since expired and Atari likely has no rights to publish it.
I got that, but they put out Berzerk anyway. My larger point is there are some very nice looking Atari 2600 games (Millipede being one) that are more fun to play and show the system off better than things like Surround.
I'm not trying to bludgeon the point home but I think a few small tweaks will go a long way, especially if they're talking about making this available in retail stores.

Welcome to the world of Game Boy modding. And photography! @MaximumRD I've had a lot of fun exploring what can be done. There's so much available now in terms of modding and making it your own, and hacking it to do really cool and fun things.

Has Atari mentioned if the screen resolution can switch between 4:3 and widescreen?
1 hour ago, CrossBow said:There is a switch on the back that I believe says 4:3 - 16:9 so ...yes.
That would've been a good way to repurpose the COLOR / BW switch

I believe the DIP SWITCHES were necessary because the upcoming 2600+ plays carts by dumping the ROM into an emulator, for the same reason various 3rd party Snes / Genesis / Nes clones that do not emulate hardware but simply dump the ROM to an emulator cannot work with Everdrives or various Flashcards, it cannot understand anything except the code of a single specific game to DUMP into the emulator, so Everdives and the like with it's menu system are just too complicated for the ROM DUMPER to interpret. By using DIP SWITCH you effectively turn the cart into that specific game in that moment so the 2600+ will dump it like any regular cart into the emulation software and run. My Retroit RetroTrio console which is a clone NES/Snes/Genesis emulates hardware so all 3 of my Everdrives work with it just fine whereas other clones such as some made by AtGames or Hyperkin also fail since they also employ the dump ROM to software emultor system. TO BE CLEAR this info comes from a thread on AA in a dedicated 2600+ Q&A thread and not too surprisingly one of the questions early on was if people would be able to use their HARMONY carts with it.
I totally get all of that. I still think it's not a good look for a retail product. Build a better cartridge or a better emulator or figure it out.
Also, no excuse for Surround as a pack-in.

Who knows, you might get your wish! At the end of this interview (shared in Atari I/O thanks to @TrekMD) Wade mentions the Jaguar and its vibrant community. Maybe they will find a way to do something cool. If they can make the numbers work, why not?

It's just the right size
I question the "design choice" to use the "retro" dip switches on the back of the multicart. I think someone innovative enough could've developed a menu. And it would be nice had they not included games like Surround, and instead included something like Millipede or Stargate on the multicart.
It would also be nice if the cartridge shells were accurate.

The Vectrex is an amazing console. I’m happy that I finally have a couple in my collection. I play it quite often.
I was surprised Atari didn't try to develop the Atari Cosmos more in the direction of a smaller Vectrex with added Holoptic displays. Vector graphics would've made the Atari Cosmos something incredible. I can understand why it was canceled before release. When you see it and realize other than the "Holoptic" display, it's really just a few LED lights, it seems more primitive than a Nintendo Game & Watch game.

Evercade "Atari" carts are moving to legacy status

I hope Atari has plans for the Lynx. The Atari cartridges are a big part of what draws my interest to Evercade. I understand the situation, it's a shame though for Evercade players.
