Controller: PADDLE CONTROLLER / KEYBOARD / PLAYER'S CHOICE
Difficulty Level: Game 5, Difficulty B
Play on: Real Hardware / Dedicated Console / MAME / Emulation OK! ✔
Squad Challenge ends 11:59 pm PST May 15th, 2020

    Objective

Play for the highest possible score using the difficulty settings defined in the challenge. Post a photo or YouTube video of your score in this thread. Scores must be achieved between May 1st through May 15th, 2020. Screen captures are not allowed as they are more easily manipulated for falsified scores. Multiple submissions are permitted. The player with the highest score at the end of the competition is the victor!

    Eligibility

Anyone can join in. All players are welcome!

    Play Rules

Games may be played on real hardware, Flashback or emulation, using any controller or keyboard, following all rules and game settings defined in the challenge. Choosing between real hardware or emulation, and choosing which controller to play on is part of formulating your strategy. Enhancements, rewinds and hacked versions of this game are not allowed.

    Difficulty Level

Game 5 (Double Cavity Breakout), Difficulty Switches set to B (Standard Full-Size Paddles). The Double Cavity playfield contains room for two "cavities", each of which contains a ball. When the game begins, the balls bounce inside each cavity but are held captive for the for the time being. When the player breaks through to the cavities, the balls are released into the playfield and set into play. Game 5 also provides two Paddles on the screen at once, the same as in Double Breakout.

    Fair Play

Your integrity is everything. Players should play fairly, be honest, and have fun! Falsified scores will result in your immediate removal from the site. It goes without saying that we will not allow cheats, hacks, cartridge frying, enhancements, rewinds, deceitful photo manipulation, subterfuge, or any other unfair advantage. Everybody hates a cheater.

Welcome to our 78th Squad Challenge! We're getting back to basics with one of my favorite games of all time, Super Breakout on Atari 2600! Super Breakout may be “the most Atari” of Atari games. There’s beauty in its simplicity. A ball & paddle smashing bricks. The analog feel of a good set of paddle controllers smoothly moving that paddle across the screen delivers a hand/eye connection to the game unlike any other. We're setting our Difficulty Switches to B for the full-size Paddles and playing Game 5, which is Double Cavitiy Breakout! Game and PDF Instructions are provided below. We last played Super Breakout in a Squad Challenge back in 2016, but with less challenging Difficulty Settings. Playing on Game 5 will be a lot of fun! We're still keeping things light and breezy as we deal with this Coronavirus situation and get back into the swing of things in the forums, so kick back, relax, break out your set of Paddles and put on classic game of Super Breakout. I hope you guys are ready for a new season of High Score Squad and good luck to everybody participating!

NOTE: Upcoming Squad Challenges will be simple and straightforward until the site issues are completely resolved. We'll dive deeper with some fun Squad Challenges this summer. Thanks for playing, and enjoy!

  2. :pole_position_blimp_big: Congratulations Kid A!

Congratulations @Kid A! You almost broke into the six digits! Simple fun NES Squad Challenges are some of my favorite, there are so many "easy to learn hard to master" games on the NES that make for fun challenges, it's always fun to go back to. Dr. Mario can be GRUELING through, it was great to see so many of you join in and fight your way through this crazy challenge! All of you should be commended for killing those pesky viruses. @Kid A clenched the top spot at the very end with a stunning score of 97,800 points! The Master @kamakazi20012 gave him a run for his money with an impressive 74,800 points to claim 2nd. @RadioPoultry @greenween and @RickR all came in very close to each other, with RadioPoultry taking 3rd. @Justin @atarilbc @Gianna @Atari Creep and @TrekMD all joined in on this one with their best scores, hopefully having fun in the Squad Challenge too! Congratulations to @Kid A for an impressive run, and to everyone who joined in this Squad Challenge and shared a score! I'd like to encourage Kid A to post his new high score on the Scoreboard, and let's make sure this Challenge continues on!

NOTE: Our next High Score Squad Challenge will be a back-to-basics Atari 2600 challenge. Be there!

  3. Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom is my favorite in terms of my most sentimental roller coaster, and The Mummy rollercoaster at Universal Studios Florida is my favorite rollercoaster to ride. It was always a lot of fun. Every Friday I'd meet up with my friend Brent and we'd go to Hard Rock Cafe for lunch, and then hit the park for a ride or two. We almost always ended up going on The Mummy. Terrific ride to go on right after you've had a Double Decker Double Cheeseburger or some Hard Rock Twisted Mac 'n Cheese!

Space Mountain was my favorite ride as a little kid. My parents always share this story about taking me to Space Mountain for the first time and preparing me that it might be scary, and then being surprised that I loved it and wanted to go again. Now Space Mountain reminds me of Sunday mornings, I'd always wash my car and go for a little Sunday morning cruise down World Dr., wrap around the back of Magic Kingdom and come back out past the Grand Floridian. The coolest part was always when you get to that part of the street where the Contemporary Resort is on your right and Space Mountain is hugged up against the street on your left. It's the closest I think you could drive a car to a rollercoaster, sort of surreal. Those are always good times and nice memories.

I love the Aerosmith rollercoaster at Hollywood Studios, I think that would be my favorite.

I wonder if that's Tommy Tallarico's favorite ride?

I love Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain at Disney

Big Thunder Mountain is fun because you ride it without restraints, but it's just on the verge of needing to be strapped in! It's a lot of fun for families.

I used to really love the Florida "Space Mountain", but the last few times I rode, it felt pretty rough.

It's pretty rickety for sure! It feels like it's made out of Erektor set pieces.

Yes, I saw that they're building that in Magic Kingdom! Just in the past few years so much has been added.

    Can't wait!

these are the Youtube days I miss. Doing real video responses etc. I like looking at the people that commented back then and the stories people shared.

Me too Rob. I miss those times very much, and how YouTube used to be for us. I created the forums bearing so much of that in mind. 🙂

Omg! I thought they'd be like $300! LOL clearly I haven't done much research. Thank you! I might just get one!

I think what you were looking at were brand new ones in the box on Amazon or something, with the prices jacked up. The Wiis on Gamestop are reconditioned, which mean they are used. I think that's a decent deal.

That's part of what Atari I/O is here for...to help one another.  If you ever want to add a new console to your arsenal of gaming gear just ask here on the forums.  I know I'll help at least locate something.

    Agreed!

I figured it was better to put Atari.io in the screenshot.

I've made improvements since the stalled release of Knabber Rob.  Working out the last few kinks.

As a side it has two 256 screen maps with infinite variations on the second 256 screen map.

Looking good @slobu! Good to see an update from you! :nintendo_mario_1up:

Above is a game play of Dr.Mario on the SNES.  It is essentially the same game just with better graphics and sounds.

I don't see any problem with using the SNES version.  However, the challenge says NES and this is on the Super NES, a different machine.  Again, I have no issues with someone using this version.  I'll leave it up to @Justin and the rest of you guys to determine.

    I mean...

What's the scoring like? Is everything the same? Even if this were allowed and nobody had a problem with it we'd have to put an asterisk next to the entry. It's a different ROM on a different machine.

I want @greenween to be able to play and have fun, that's what we're all about. Just friends playing.

I'll be joining in on this one in a couple of days. I do have a question. I have the Tetris/Dr. Mario cart for the SNES. I assume it's the same as the NES version, but can use emulation if there are any doubts. Can anyone verify that they are indeed the same?

Good question! Is there a Doctor in the house? Someone to verify? Thanks! :nintendo_mario_pill:

Here's a K-Mart sticker from SwordQuest EarthWorld.  It looks like it was marked down a few times.

VERY cool @RickR!! I was hoping to see some K-Mart price tags show up! I've been looking for them on my stuff as well. I wonder if the 1183 on the top left of the price tag is a Nov 83 date.. The one behind it says 108- and then it's cut off, makes me wonder if it says 1083 for Oct 83?

The new SwordQuest Earthworlds I got are sealed, the boxes are so-so, but they looked really rough because they had very large discount price tags on there that were the size of Office Max address labels that you'd run through your printer. I think they must have come from Service Merchandise or something. Kinda ruined the look of the box. I like price tags but these ones were huge. I did some label surgery with Goo-Gone and the results were tremendous. I should post a little tutorial, they came out great.

  10. Have you guys seen Ninja Odyssey for Intellivision? I had no idea Intellivision could look this good! Ninja Odyssey is a new platformer for your Intellivision. Levels and gameplay are just like Wonderboy, but it looks incredible for an Intellivision game. This game works on any original Intellivision system and doesn't require any additional hardware. This almost looks like a 7800 or NES game. Well done!

Thanks for posting the manual.  I'm going to need a refresher on this one.

It's real simple Rick! It's along the lines of Tetris or Columns. You want to line up 4 of the same color to make them disappear. There are three viruses that we need to get rid of, Red, Yellow and Blue. Each vitamin has two sides, each with a color. Line the blue vitamin up with the blue virus, get 4 of the same color lined up in a row (including the virus) and you've cured the virus. Then it's on to the next screen! Easy as pie.
