Justin, I think you'll agree that anybody who can roll the score on this one can pretty much marathon it 🙂  And considering you were the first here to do it, I gladly yield my place to you.

Thanks Scott, it's cool. No host wants to win the prize at their own party, if you know what I mean.

You did really well and should be proud, I'm thinking sometime filming my score and seeing just how far I can take it.

Welcome to our 80th Squad Challenge! We're pulling out a great and often overlooked classic that mixes Zaxxon game play with Egyptian motifs for a really unique game on the Atari 7800. To win at Desert Falcon requires some basic understanding of the game play and how the Super Powers work. My suggestion is to take a glance at the instruction manual and familiarize yourself with the Hieroglyphs and how to play. I'd also encourage you guys to SHARE YOUR STRATEGIES here in the Challenge, this is a great opportunity for that! Game and PDF Instructions are provided below. It's time to kick back, relax, and collect Pharo's lost jewels! I hope you guys are ready for a new season of High Score Squad and good luck to everybody participating!

NOTE: Another great Squad Challenge is coming up soon! We'll be playing a DOUBLE FEATURE Squad Challenge next time! Thanks for playing, and enjoy!

  3. :pole_position_blimp_big: Congratulations Scott Stilphen!

Congratulations @Scott Stilphen! Your Mario Bros. score took top placement in our Final Standings! I hope everybody enjoyed experiencing Mario Bros. on the Atari 2600. This version of the game plays slightly different from other versions mostly due to the 2600's limitations, but I think the game looks really good and is fun to play once you work out the different dynamic if you're used to the other versions. Racking up points can become a bit of a puzzle to put all of the pieces together to make your strategy work, and I think that's a lot of fun.

This is a second win in a row for Scott, congratulations to Scott for taking the top spot at the very end with a 1st Place score of 1,002,400 points! I took 2nd with 1,000,200 points, and @atarilbc had consistently good showings in this challenge and ended up placing 3rd with 986,200 points. @RickR, @greenween, @kamakazi20012, @Gianna, @Atari Creep@RadioPoultry and @TrekMD all had great showings, and in general most all of our scores really improved from what they had been at the beginning of the challenge. Congratulations to everybody on an exciting run, and to everyone who joined in this Squad Challenge and shared a score! I'd like to encourage Scitt to post his new high score on the Scoreboard, and let's make sure this Challenge continues on!

NOTE: Our next High Score Squad Challenge will be an Atari 7800 challenge. Be there!

  4. It's awesome that you got ahold of one of these. Curious if you have it set up with everything else (where you already had your TG16 and Duo) or if you've got it in another room. Just like with everything else, I was also the only kid on the block that had a TurboGrafx-16 growing up. It was in the lineup with my 7800, Lynx and Jaguar as stuff all of my friends came over to play at my house because they were all such an oddity to them.

I've been loving Shump Junkie's channel ever since you first turned me onto it. He does great reviews. I should reach out to him and invite him to Atari I/O. TurboGrafx-16 / PC Engine has always been my favorite (non-Atari) lineup. I'm glad you're into TG and I feel like more and more people are realizing just how awesome these games are and how they fill that "After NES but before everything else that came afterward" niche.

  5. Awesome episode @btbfilms76 I watched it with my bae. Desert Falcon is one of my favorite Atari 7800 games, I love the unique blend of the Zaxxon gameplay style with the Egyptian motifs. That was a nice deep dive you did into @Video 61's Grip-Stick joystick, they did a great job bringing a highly responsive joystick to the Atari 7800. Also love how you speak of Atari 7800 games like a fine wine, "these two are a nice pairing" ... "it's got a nice 1987 vintage to it" etc. Only you could pull that off. Can't wait to see more BTB, good luck with your move!!

  6. Q: How has Classic Gaming changed over the years since you’ve been involved?

When I first got into classic gaming it was about collecting and playing these great games. For me that's Square One and that's where I still stand today. Everything I do with the site, and in my personal "classic gaming adventures" is rooted in this idea of the original source, these games we've always had fun with and the experience of playing them with family and friends.

When I began this Atari classic gaming journey, the (consumer) internet was brand new and I wouldn't have access to the web for a few more years, so it was just me doing something that I liked to do. I didn't know anyone else was out there doing this. It was a little like being in LOST or The Walking Dead and being alone somewhere setting up a radio transmission to see if anyone else was out there, and finding someone else responding on the radio.

By the end of the '90s and early 2000s there was a robust community of classic Atari gamers sprouting up online. It felt indie / hobbyist. There were just a handful of Atari sites out there, and I'm proud to have been one of them. The gaming expos popped up and we started to gather together.

Since then it's grown exponentially. The home-brew scene exploded. The advent of YouTube brought about a ton of personalities and more people sharing their love of classic games in new ways. But a lot has changed too. When you'd say "classic gaming" we used to think "CGE" and these days a lot of people think "AVGN".

I always enjoyed the original experience of collecting and playing these games and sharing our passion in a small community. As things have changed over the years I've tried to focus Atari I/O on that original experience.

  7. Hey everyone. I just rolled the score past 1,000,000 points. A video is provided below showing the score roll over. It's a few seconds long, but you can see the score roll and it's the best I could do playing the game with one hand and holding my cellphone in the other, trying to capture the score roll over. I've also put up a picture I took of my game at 925,800 points while I was still playing.

Yes, I'm getting Slipice. No, he is not unlimited. He runs out after a while, so you can't go on forever collecting infinity Slipice. Fireballs still kill you, enemies still eat you alive, you're still going to make mistakes and die and the game is still relentless and you still have to be good to get a good score. There are other things going on at the same time that are like different ingredients baked into the "cake" that has become my strategy.

I'm going to stick with this score for now. You'll see in the video I had more than six lives built up and I could've kept playing another 30 mins, but I turned the game off after I captured the score rolling over. I feel like I've played enough for tonight and I still have things I need to wrap up before bed. I'd also rather have one of you beat this score. It can be done and I know all of you guys have the skill to put all of the puzzle pieces together.

    High Score: 1,000,200

That 5200 Jr model is sexy!  THAT's the 5200 that should have been released.  That's the 5200 that should be sitting in my collection.

I'm really partial to the original 4-Port 5200 design. Its designer Regan Cheng said he wanted to give it a "nasty" look, something kind of mean looking but also something that felt like it would've been bought in a Bang & Olufsen store in the world of Blade Runner. The warm glow of the red light was inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey. I think it's one of Atari's best looking systems.

What would I have done differently? Make it the size of the 2700. It's a little smaller and easier to handle. I also would have made the plastic 100% black, like the 7800.

At least put out a comic book with very cryptic clues.  MarioQuest BrosWorld .

For me, there are two or three things going, and if you're lucky, they can overlap at the right moments. Ultimately though it's just playing as long as possible and racking up as many points as you can without getting killed.

My biggest suggestion: Watch out for those fireballs!
